Description

It's probably odd to send a WWI bomber as a "Get Well Card". But I'm odd, and I know how much Bill (bmac62) likes also this kind of birds. Get Well Soon, Bill we are missing you!!! The G.IV was one of the standard twin-engine G-type bombers built by the Allgemeine Elektrizitaets Gesellschaft of Berlin. It was used principally for tactical bombing of targets within a short range of its base rather than as a long-range strategic bomber. The A.E.G. Company pionereed the use of metal rather than wooden construction in their standard twin-engine bombers and the G.IV was an early attempt at applying these methods to a large aircraft. The G.IV normally carried a crew of three, a pilot and two gunners, but there were room also for an additional crew member, an observer or a commanding officer. The G.IV war difficult to fly without a gunner in the nose position, and there were problems with elevator control, particularly when landing. The speciman in the Canadian Air Museum is the only surviving example of the A.E.G. G.IV, the only twin-engine German WWI aircraft in existence, and the only surviving machine displaying the dark lozenge-pattern camouflage used by the Germans for night flight in WWI. It was captured and shipped to Canada as war trophy in 1919. Don't worry the next Canals of New Mars episode is coming soon!
