Description

This is the Memorial for the Twin Towers called Memory and Light. As I said, it's about 200 metres from my home, and this is also one of my favorite views. It gives a glimpse of how Padova was until the 1950s, when most canals and canalised branches of the two rivers crossing it were interred. On the right, the orange building behind the tree was a textile factory (now offices), and in the background there are a medieval bridge and church. On the left there is the landing wharf of the boats one can use to tour the canals and go to Venice by boat. Here (not seen) opposite the memorial there was the custom house (now a library) for the boats and barges carrying goods from Venice. Behind the bridge there still is a lock, and the 18th century church for the boatmen, currently dwarfed by the 1960s buildings. This is what architect Daniel Libeskind said to explain his work Memory and Light: "The light of Liberty shines through the Book of History. This Book is open to the memory of the heroes of September 11, 2001". In fact, the 'book' is luminous and it includes a section of a World Trade Center beam, salvaged after the 9/11 disaster. The beam was donated by the United States to the region of Veneto, and then to the city of Padua to thank it for the support provided during those days. Thank you for your kind comments.

This tribute to the 9/11 heroes is a lovely photo of a superbly crafted memorial structure. (Italians know how to do this type of thing right!) Thanks for posting it, Sandy!
