Description

The bark of a Madrona at MooseRidge Gardens. That place was a total photographer's paradise! For those of you in California saying, "No no, it's MADRONE," you are partly correct. According to the Sunset Western Garden Book, south of the Siskiyous it IS Madrone. North of the Siskiyous it's Madrona. Go figure. Of course with all the specimen trees at MooseRidge, this is probably something totally exotic and special. But I'd bet my bottom dollar it's SOME sort of Arbutus!

I don't know, it looks like some kind of eucalyptus to me! Love the reddish sheen, textures and peeling bark on this old timer.

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought this was copper or something...lo an' behold, it's bark! Wonderful. I'm learning a lot of botanical stuff just from popping onto Renderosity, and that's a good thing. I love the colors in this, especially since I have this continual color thing going! Great smoothness and curled papery texture off on the right. Great light. This is elegant!

I think in some cultures they call it "naked tree", for a good reason... Great shot, Tara! and have fun in Chicago!!!

lol, I feel like saying, "oh, for CERTAIN it's an arbutus!" (I have no clue what an 'arbutus' is!) I do recognize the bark as being "madrone/madrona"—I know that from either your or Marilyn's galleries. It's an amazing tree regardless. And one of your "Tara" shots because of that wonderful crop. The tree is actually top-heavy here, leaning into the top, and looking like a big muscular limb. Simple composition, and very complex textures. And your separation of tree from background is just right. (I don't know if you ever fully explained how you do that, when you were here. That's ok, I got to see you crop & prepare a few pictures, and that was worth all the laptops in the world!) Your capture looks very alive, the way you do with facial portraits. You coax the life to the surface everytime. Beautiful tree capture, and more riches from Mooseridge.
