Description

This East German guard tower was standing in Glienicke, Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR -East Germany) across the wall from Berlin-Frohnau. Frohnau is part of Bezirk (borough) Reinickendorf, one of two Bezirke that made up the French Sector of West Berlin. The West Berlin government put up a wooden platform near the wall that allowed people in West Berlin to look across the Niemandsland (no man's land) toward the tower. As I pointed my camera toward the tower, ready to take a picture, I saw that the East German guard who manned the tower was watching me through binoculars. Kind of unnerving. This picture was taken in July 1978 during U.S. President Jimmy Carter's visit to West Berlin. The picture was later scanned. Thank you for viewing, commenting, and favs, Sig...

Imagine being an East German Guard at that time. They were probably under all kinds of dire threats if anybody violated no-man's land. Good view. Thanks for posting.

Everything about the Cold War was unnerving. A tense time for everyone of all ages. This is unnerving to me just looking at it. Too many things are remembered. But at least we are past all that now...right????

Unnerving? I had a friend in 3rd Mech do the same as you, and got a machine gun pointed back at him! That was in the early '70s.

Dein Bild weckt Erinnerungen. Sehr gut. Danke. Herzliche Grüße aus Berlin JuliSonne

Nice capture and freaky photo isn't it strange how they had to keep people in.. the people cant have been to indoctrinated or liked the system of government if they where wanted to leave.. they were prisoners in their own country.. Only ones that liked it were the top pigs that were more equal than other pigs (animal farm)
