Description

This East German guard tower was standing in Glienicke, Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR -East Germany) across the wall from Berlin-Frohnau. Frohnau is part of Bezirk (borough) Reinickendorf, one of two Bezirke that made up the French Sector of West Berlin. The West Berlin government put up a wooden platform near the wall that allowed people in West Berlin to look across the Niemandsland (no man's land) toward the tower. As I pointed my camera toward the tower, ready to take a picture, I saw that the East German guard who manned the tower was watching me through binoculars. Kind of unnerving. This picture was taken in July 1978 during U.S. President Jimmy Carter's visit to West Berlin. The picture was later scanned. Thank you for viewing, commenting, and favs, Sig...

Cool pic. I'll bet that these towers are all gone and "no man's land" has become valuable real estate. Walls around countries are much better at keeping people in than keeping them out.
