Description

Mark has said to me on more than one occasion, "symmetry is a tyrant," and he's certainly right about that! If you're not standing in EXACTLY the right spot when shooting architecture, things appear to be tilted. I can't tell you how much I've learned while getting these images through postwork. I assure you, this is perfectly, thoroughly, exactly lined up down the center line of the door, and it STILL looks like it's leaning a bit to the right. Shoot, I don't know. Maybe the whole danged building IS leaning a little to the right! LOL! This is on the Gold Coast in Chicago, across Lakeshore Drive from Lake Michigan. With a grand, impressive, two-story entrance like this, I would expect to see some rather grand, impressive double or triple doors. But no. One door, very modest. Perhaps this is the servant's entrance. Maybe it's just me, because I spent so long fiddling with this image, but that door seems a bit anticlimactic.

I agree with you! a Foyer like this needs at least double doors, with stained glass and large brass handles

it happens partially from the distortion of using wide angle, never the less an excellent shot

I must agree that I would expect a massive door. Something grand and almost royal. It is a gorgeous imagine though. I adore the reflections on the door too! Nice one Tannie!

LOL, not only does the door seem puny, that damn building IS leaning to the right!! Still, another great shot--and we didn't get the tiniest fraction of them!!

A beautiful part of the building it is, but to me that door seems a bit humble among the whole, doesnt it? But I think you did a splendid job shooting it. Ok, I see others think the same as I do about the door..

Agreed, it is rather a let down to see only one 'bland' door. Do I still see some colour in the refelction? Well done! Clive

Think of the added expense of treating an entrance this way if the building were being built today. But the character added is immense. I read somewhere that when we look through our camera's eye piece that our brain straightens things up for us, so we don't perceive the tilt that the camera's optics does see. That's why when working with some of these pictures, we are surprised at what we have. How many times have you said to yourself, how did that happen...it didn't look that way when I took the picture? This is really the case when shooting upward...like up a tall building or up a light pole, flag pole, etc. This is a case of what you see is not what you get:) This fine photo makes the case for us.

I should have to fill that courtyard with something in large planters maybe!

I'm looking at the approach to the door. Plain bed with curbs on each side ending in a single, homely door. I think this might be for deliveries. You may have missed the grand entrance on the other side of the building.

It work as part of your collection of doors. The contrast between all the doors makes this one stand out and that is what makes it work so well even as it leans here and there or does it only tilt?

No, that entrance really needs a much grander door! Great shot of this beautiful entry, and I know exactly what you mean about lining it up. I've been struggling with that very issue on some shots of the Priory in Christchurch!

Firstly - are you sure your right leg isn't slightly shorter than your left leg? Hehehe.... Seriously - this is lovely... I see a red carpet running from the street to the door with beautiful people making their way in! Great image and POSTWORK Tannie! :)

Lol Tara! We are always our own worst critics:-) The door is super, the building is grand and from someone who is in tilt mode half the time, it looks perfectly straight to me:-)Well seen, very well captured!

Grand entrance...simple door. How Chicago is that!? It's like we forget to take things all the way here, and one of the reasons why this image may appear to lean a bit is simply because Chicago was built on a swamp that smelled like skunk cabbage and onions. Things sink and list, and are nudged off sound by the tiny tectonic shifts that this city DOES experience regularly. We're on a major fault line after all, but California gets all of the credit in terms of earthquakes. So anyway...enough of that. This image rocks. I'm gonna go scrounging around the gold coast now, looking for this place. I've probably moved dental equipment into the building. (yeah, you'd be surprised at who actually uses dental chairs and such!) Great work, and I love the serene elegance you've captured here.

I agree with everybody else. Great entrance - dull door. Needs some color. I don't see the lean, looks great to me. Dana

you can correct this by using perspective in a vectors prog. very good shot anyway.

It does seem a bit mundane of a door to be in such a great entrance way. Great shot and the building is old, it could have settled. Lots of them do up this way.

Maybe a few plants in pots beside the door would look nice....but still a very nice entrance...great shot
