Description

Good evening and failte! Another short look-in at Glasgow, the dirty, the ugly.... Glasgow has very fine and noble parts - in the west, where the air is fresh and clean - as other cities of our world, too. Welcome to HYNDLAND, a qarter of well-constructed fine tenements. Once this was agriculture areal, owned by the Hyndland farm. Then, in 1898 till 1910, it was completely covered with rows of tenements like these, most built from red, others from yellow sandstone. Architects as John Short, Alex Adam and others worked here. The most famous of them was John Campbell McKellar (1859-1941), who constructed more then 640 of this houses from 1898 till 1910. McKellar run his own building company, but worked for others, too, for example Western Property Company or Duncan & Henderson. McCellar constructed alone three quarters of Hyndland for his own company, he worked although in Glasgow quarters as Maryhill and Crossmyloof. Hyndland is only one of the western Glasgow tenement quarters, others are Rowanhill and many, many more. The idea behind that plan we can call a "revolution": McKellar believed in home ownership and had the idea "Make tenants to owners". He offered his clients to buy their homes per deposit and quarterly payments. This system was never heard in Scotland before and worked well till 1910. A clients list of 1910 shows: Clerk, Engineer, Traveller, Draughtsman, Bookkeeper, Teacher, Cashier, retired Minister, Chemist, Architect, Town Postman, Steward... Hyndland today shows a little morbide character: Most tenements look well and are in a good shape, but others (a lot of them) are for sale, some stairs are broken, gardens are a wilderness, and some parts seem as if they sleep, waiting for better times. Maybe this is a mirror of the U.K.s tenements market today, I don`t know.... I took lots of pics about this architecture... I hope you like this pic. Thanks for your interest and your comments, the are all welcome. A special thanks to all of you who commented my earlier pics. billcody

A beautiful POV! seems like a wonderful tight, knit-neighbourhood! Certainly seems like everyone likes being at home, marked by all these cars :) Beautiful lighting and clarity, with stunning architecture exposed and elegantly presented!
