Description

When I was taking pictures of this building, a nice lady stopped to talk to me, because she thought I might be a photographer for a local real estate magazine. Apparently this is a famous building where someone important once lived. I think there was a plaque and everything, but I didn't actually follow what she was telling me, having never heard of the famous person. I was impressed with the building, though! It was gorgeous. Do you remember the Private Entrance I posted several days ago? That was in the same building.

This is another example of why I prefer older buildings. The care taken in their construction is evident here and you have captured it very well.

A beautiful doorway complete with fleurs-de-lis...but you have an affinity for lilies anyway don't you? Now, you've really got me wondering who lived there or may be was born there. Jack Benny was born in Chicago in 1894, Walt Disney in 1901, William S. Paley in 1901, Gloria Swanson in 1897, and Raquel Welsh in 1940...just to name a few...:)

I just love your door shots, Tara, and there must have been an important person living in this building, there are some little hints to it by the imperial lilies in the frieze

I love arched doorways. There is just something so cool about them. You can tell here where there were arched door ways here, but one of the previous owners had "modified" them. Great shot.

Doorways are always amazing! They hold such stories and so many implied histories. I think that's why I liked them in Prague so much...they were like this one: arched, detailed, old, and occasionally well-maintained, though more often than not, encrusted with flaking paint, grafitti, and stains of dubious pedigree. As for this image, it shimmers with wonderful light and color, superb details, and an evocative sense of history looming somewhere in the background, but not exactly where you'd expect it to be. One of the joys of Chicago is that weird quality, a side effect of the city's habit of reinventing itself, as if it never had a core identity to begin with. But then you see doors like this, and there is a history here, it's just one that few locals even know about. Wonderful. This is so evocative, and as always, so spot-on-perfect!
