I'm back a bit from resting, and I decided to do my long-delayed dedi for Sir Harry--aka goodoleboy. But instead of doing my usual fantasy, I decided to return to my roots & do a drawing. It's a little heavy (lol), but it's based on Harry's beautiful image here. It isn't because Harry's traditional: He shoots every kind of subject & in every kind of light: No. It's because there's something so straight forward & 'honest' about his work---and I mean that word even though I can't explain it---that he makes the strange seem familiar, and the familiar, wholly new. He delights in the light of a block of glass, or the shadows of a faucet on a bleak wall at sundown, or the sheer delight of a sun-ray over a series of lush roses, as if they'd arrived in Harry's backyard from a new land. He captures freshness & glee, which is what we seek as artists... And he does montages---where you spend eons choosing the right image to follow the last---and he gets them right. He has numerous sequences of flowers or fences or planes etc, traveling through a kind of Theme & Variations & concluding like a small poem. And in series like his Memorial Day shots, he gets moments of genuine photojournalism: an old soldier slouched over a fearful cannon, using it as an arm rest; or a veteran in a wheelchair who---no matter how uncomfortable he was or how hard he labored to make his way through this crowd---sits in rapt, moved attention while a parade of veterans moves by. I found huge dignity in those shots & great humor as well. And he's done so many others, and there's always a twist or smile or burst of beauty at the end. The trouble with dedis is that you can only write so much so you always leave out more: But Harry, your constant exploration & delight, your sense of humor & genuine humanity, and your joy at capturing the things right below our noses---not to mention your engaged comments on so many artists & your puns, alliterations, "toodles" & lyrics, etc---have been a true pleasure. You're one of RR's fundaments, and I wish you many more years of light & inspiration, and I hope others will go through your gallery to see that even in "semi-beautiful Chino" (lol) there is much beauty when it's captured by a photographer as committed as you. You got my first car, Harry: Let it stand for everything you give us here, which, to me, is wonderful. (Get over that virus soon!)

Thanks so much for taking us back to your roots, and for the lucid exploration of goodoleboy's art. Lovely technique and progression - the metamorphosis is subtle and joyful... like the artist you are describing. I'm off to his gallery now.

Wonderful line drawings Mark. I particularly like the flare in the upper corner of the third version of Harry's immaculate 1934 Cord. You've captured the classic lines...the up sweep of the fenders, the old style headlight lenses, the curious smallness of the windshield...huge car...small, flat windshield. Your sense of proportion is excellent. And your dedi words are right-on! There's lots of words one could use to describe Harry...I think of consistency and appreciation for detail. ...although I've never met him in person, I'm sure what you see is what you get and I mean that as a compliment.

Mark this really made my day. I have missed you and your art so much and seeing this dedi to your friend is so uplifting. I zoomed in and have to say that dark tones work so well with it as your detailing of the car is second to none. Your images done with care and the impact you have on everyone around you has been missed my friend.

How fantastic and skillful these drawings are. What a beautiful dedication. The car has so much personality, and there's so much care in each line. I love how the light changes in each image, and ends with the sun shining down. Your words are equally beautiful. You're one of the most talented writers on this site, and knowing how sincere you are taking as much care in your words and observations as you do in your drawings, is always a real pleasure and a learning experience on many levels.

How can I top all these comments? Well, I just won't try! Harry will simply adore this work of Art. I went back to look at his original image and you've given the drawings so much life in a grand old jalopy sort of style. It looks as though lots of time and the finest details are put into this. Just Gorgeous! It is #222 in your gallery. (I think that is significant, too... just haven't decided why.) Excellent!!

OMG, to the tenth power! Like everyone says, glad you're back to once again stimulate and stun us with one of your exquisite artistic displays. The ink line work is fabulous in this sequence. Patience is your virtue. And, Mark, with a plethora of fine fotographers out there, how can I find the proper adjectives and nouns to employ in response to this fantastic dedication and inkline application of one of the more elegant antique/classic autos of yore. I am sincerely moved and humbled by your eloquent narrative, and that's saying something coming from this elderly coot, with my bizarre sense of humor, and on occasion a curmudgeon, gadabout and gadfly in this madcap world. Tons/tonnes of thanks again! And the virus, fortunately, is dissipating, and I'm almost back to being my old self.

What a fabulous drawing! I am humbled before your talent. I've sat here flipping back and forth between your drawing and Harry's photograph, and I can see what you've done, and it's simply amazing! Not photorealism (thank you) but perfect, nonetheless! Your art reinforces the lecture you presented on that subject a couple weeks ago (I mean that in the best possible way) and I'm nodding and getting it! A wonderful piece of work, and a beautiful dedi for Harry.

If I were in the market to buy such a car, I would be in trouble after having seen your version. None other would do. Yes, I went and looked at goodoleboy's photo, and it is beautiful. But I simply adore your rendition of it. I will never own one of these because there are only three .. right here. Oh .. and also I could never afford one, LOL! Your works on real paper with real ink, pencil, paints, whatever are just awesome. I will be looking for more of these, please??? And it is SO wonderful to see you back .. and please, don't worry about catching up in my gallery, you've already stopped and left the most delightful, wonderful comment!!

I had to look when I saw that this was for Harry, one of my favorite people on rendo. His descriptions of his place of residence keep me in a perpetual giggle. Lovely dedication to him and richly deserved. Your drawing is excellent! Your lines are so strong and sure. There is so much character and life to it. It has been places and knows much. There is a strength and solidness to it. I only know Harry through this site, but all of the characteristics I see in your drawing, I see in Harry too. Excellent work!
