You might spot me at Kirra Beach, the South-Eastern end of the Gold Coast, Australia, if you like beach walking like myself... but there is more ! My son Jeff (*jif3d*, here at Rendo, it helps to advertise, ooops)... he took this pic of me in 2000, then manipulated it in photo-shop and it's still one of my favourites. Just very briefly about my past... *born in East Prussia; *grew up in Berlin, West Germany; *migrated to "OZ" in 1960, (not the Wizard of Oz) but...AUSTRALIA ! I guess I was more into '2D' since early childhood, and thinking that my son Jeff may have inherited some of my artistic skills, because he translated them into '3D'. I am hooked on photography, since I discovered cameras... that's it in a nutshell. BTW - one of my fav.quotes.... ** I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure - which is trying to please everybody !** that's a wrap... Cheers Brigitte.

Gosh when I zoomed this and saw those fangs I thought they would look great in one of Jeffs images. I have no idea what this creepy crawly is called but you have captured him beautifully and he would scare me silly if I saw him alive, especially with those long feelers. I hope you and Jeff have a great birthday celebration.

Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday to Jeff. The closeup of the face look like a creature from the movie Alien. He's very deceiving from behind. Great macro.

Oh this is gorgeous! Keep this critter away from trees, however; it's a longhorn beetle of some sort and they bore into trees to lay their eggs. Their larvae, being vegetarians, view trees as one big salad, which is bad for you if you want to keep the tree. I don't think that all longhorn beetles are completely destructive, but Chicago has been on Asian Tiger Beetle Alert for quite some time. They look like this critter here, only with white spots and HUGE appetites. Oh, and by the way, these guys don't really have teeth...those "fangs" are his outer jaws. On humans, the tips merge together and form the chin...so what you've so beautifully photographed are his mandibles, which on insects compose the outer/lower jaw. The teeth are inside! But I think beetles are largely toothless. As for the picture itself, I love beetles. Apparently God is inordinately fond of beetles as well, since there are more beetle species on the planet than any other breed of animal. They account for a HUGE portion of earth's biomass! That's impressive, but I can't remember the exact figure. Anyway, I love this shot, and since I'm not a tree-grower, I love the critter too. Its such a regal example of beetle-grace. Wonderful work!
