Description

This is the thorns of the acacia tree and a favourite for giraffes to feed on! I have watched them many times how they negotiate the thorns to get the juicy leaves between them... Amazing that they are not all full of weird piercings!!! I also have had the privilege to step in one of these puppies with flip-flops. They kind of go right through! That was not a particularly fun experience with a flip flop pinned to my foot! Thank you for visiting and for your welcome comments and favs on my "Stormy Seas" upload of yesterday! Happy weekend to all! Hugs, Carin xx

Not only is it painful having a piercing of your left big toe, those thorns are coated with a nasty irritant too. Am I allowed to say 'sharp focus'?? Clive

I knew we had a tree in the Sonoran desert I have called the Acacia - its the whitethorn acacia and its a shrub. The flowers are different but the leaves are much the same. It does have spines .5-2cm long and I remember dragging a branch across the desert floor a time or two with one pegged to the bottom of my flip-flop. (yes, I wear flip-flops in the desert as long as I'm staying on the rutted trails.)

Ouch...but I'll bet you said something different when you stepped on one of these mighty thorns. I've got a tree behind my house just off my property that has thorns that are dark in color but the same length and shape. Nothing messes with this tree...particularly, the "Great Plains" giraffes:-)))

Seeing these is painful enough...stepping on one must be unimaginable. I have a pretty vivid imagination and well...flip-flops pinned to feet isn't an experience I'll ever savor. I'll stick to fungal tea, thank you very much! But having said all of that, I love the details of this photo. The light picks out the contours and details of these thorns and the DOF is great. It's a great shot, if a bit...um...prickly.

ouch !!!, I hear that stuff makes a good lion proof fence as well. If they wont tackle it for a tasty hhuman then it must be impressive stuff

Superlative focus and lighting in this marvo macro, Carin! Wow, giraffes must have a mouth lined with steel in order to chew on this stuff! They would need a tetanus shot after every chomp! And, Thorny is also the name of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson's next door neighbor.

Those are some serious thorns! I cringe to think of one of these going through your foot. (Or mine, or anybody else's!) One or two, as in the foreground, seems manageable. However, realizing they cover the entire bush ... that' formidable!

I'd be in serious trouble walking around there, I don't think they make steel toed flip flops yet--great shot of these nasty thorns!
