Description
This one is just opposite the Bacchiglione river's bank I posted previously. The bridge is a remnant of the old Roman bridge, re-built in the Middle Ages. Here there was the boundary of Roman Padua, a very rich and flourishing town. The bridge also connects the bank of the Navigable Internal Canal with the medieval Castle and the Main Branch of the river after the Venetians bridled and tamed its unruly course and its disastrous floods. The river is inhabited by a number of fish species, especially the catfish, that was imported to Europe in the 19th century from the Mississippi river, and prospered. Once fried catfish was a typical fish meal here in the old 'osterie' (inns) under the porches, but I don't think it's fished any longer because of the pollution, at least I was told that.

very desolate scene, especially with the story bit about the pollution.... it takes guts and vision to shoot something like this... very nicely done!

Nice photo for sure Sandra. I had no idea that catfish were originally imported to this area and think it sad that pollution has taken it over

Wow! Amazing scene! Do those small boats reside on the bottom at high tide? They sure look waterlogged! A most special photo! Well done!

Very interesting image and information! I'd be afraid of what the catfish looked like after all this time.
