Description

An early morning cruise through the garden, presented me with another discovery, of a hairy caterpillar, one I have never seen before. I wonder what kind of butterfly he is going to pupate into ? *** In my books he is an absolutely interesting and amazing looking specimen, the colours are so vibrant and maybe this could be a new type of punk hair-do ? *** Cheers *BB*

It almost looks like two caterpillars combined into one! I have never seen anything like it, would almost seem to defy nature as the vibrant colouring would certainly stand out in any situation- perhaps the coloring is there as a false warning of this guy being venomous or something to deter predators? Very fascinating specimen indeed!

Well it looks like the egg-plant leaf is a goner, so hope this fella turns out to be even a more colourful butterfly than in caterpillar form (if possible ?)...or at least tasty on the BBQ ! (just kidding) Great macro captures and I think you may have discovered a new species ! Christmas ~Cheers~

Chip caught one of these in September here and people were quite helpful in identifying it. I believe they decided it's a white marked tussock moth. Wonderful shots of this amazing catepillar!

Love this BB. Amazing creature. My Harry & David "Tower of Treats" is disassembled but there are still some goodies left. The best thing in there was the pears...delicious...best I've ever had.

I can't imagine it being any more lovely as an adult than it is in your capture. Fabulous detail and pov.

What a fantastic little fellow and you captured it so beautifully. It seems it cant deside if it wants to look like a cactus or a larva, so it chose to be both LOL !

I'm guessing this is some kind of tussock moth variation...it's got tufts of hair on the back like brushes and it has those strange sort of extravagant Chinese mask appendages (in black) and well...the colors are amazing! What creatures! I sometimes wish that extravagant catarpilars were adult forms, because at times the moths or butterflies they turn into are rather drab...but oh well...perma-pillars are probably not viable in terms of what nature determines of her creatures. This is a gorgeous piece of work and I'm going to try and find out what this beauty is! What colors!
