Description

Everybody needs a kick start at the beginning of a new year and especially on Monday, so I though 'Looking for Wind' might be a good way to begin. A Paddle Steamer is towing a sail ship out of harbour and literally "looking for wind". See my web site HERE. Done in Bryce and Photoshop and dedicated to Novelist. dmrc_enabled_wbtn.gif

I'm way late on this, but I was gone for a while and it never gets 'old', as yours is some of the most consummate work on Rosity. It's a dream, a vision as well as a painting from life: The steam mixing with the clouds makes for a huge canopy of light & mist overhanging the piece, giving it a sense of vapor & ethereality. Yet you've balanced that with the skyline's heavy smoke coming out of chimneys, almost an industrial landscape, even though these look mainly like residences. It has a Dickensian feel, hough it also feels like Turner (in the superb capture of atmosphere, clouds and light). (I wonder if Turner ever used Bryce, lol...) I much appreciate the architectural detail, and oh would it be nice to see this huge: You've not rendered just cookie-cutter facades, but facades with variation from left to right, with the decay & uneven distribution of proportion that real live facades acquire; and some angled renders that are wonderful art in themselves. This level of detail---typical of your work---reminds us that a highly integrated & complex work of art is a massive labor of love, which is what your pieces are. Your mid & foreground are also eloquently articulated, with the woody hues and no effort to prettify anything. Finally, the girl is almost from a dream, waving into the future & ruminations of other worlds; barefoot, as if she stepped in from a novel, and giving the piece an air of both whimsy and deep nostalgia. And the ships complete it (with the water) as the 'stars' of the piece---yet they're no more stars than anything else. In a work this complex, the focus shifts & shifts; the sign of a work of broad detail & vision. A wholly complex piece; and, like all your work, with a palette all its own. And an evocation of a seaport filled with longing, workaday life, lives we'll never see, and a sense of old urban design. I don't comment a lot, but I've seen your work many times, and this is one example of why you're one of the best here...And your dedi to Cathy is not only wonderfully generous, but seems so fitting since her images so often portray a reaching for further worlds & deep pasts & the child in all of us dancing through it all. Superb.
