Description

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANA! My oldest son if you haven't noticed. As I took this photo, I commented that this was a beautiful arch. There was a nearby sign identifying it as an arch as did the park map. But a park ranger, that heard me, corrected me and identified it as a window. So here I am and Im going to try and describe what you are looking at, in this posting. Bryce Canyon was a lake, from 63 million to about 40 million years ago; fed by streams of cold water - melt off from the surrounding mountains and full of sediment. As the lake dried up, vertical joints were created, by uplifts from below the surface, which have eroding since. So as the elements (mostly wind, rain and temperature changes) continue to change this arch, the top will cave in and it will become a wall and window overlooking the Dixie National Forest below. In any case, try and enjoy the photo. Some information from Wikipedia. Scanned from a photo taken in 1996. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments. Dana

It's funny but all the information I have read says there is no real difference in windows and arches. The difference is in bridges and arches (or windows). Natural bridges are formed by water erosion (streams, rivers)...natural arches or windows are formed by weather erosion (rain, cold, heat, wind). I love this shot for the richness of color and perspective.
