Description

It is almost midnight here in South Africa and I am deeply shocked and saddened by the horrible aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. I have been watching CNN and SKY and to see the destruction and devastation but more importantly the human suffering and pain is almost unbearable. To the people of Haiti - may God carry you all through this unthinkable time of need and sorrow. Image: Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.

What a gorgeous photo...the lighting is superb, almost myterious. Going straightaway to favorites. Things are bad, bad in Haiti...but that poor place just goes from tragedy to tragedy. I like to think of living life on the mountain tops...those folks never get to leave the valley floors.

I cannot even imagine what these people are going through...to know that schools full of children and hospitals full of patients have collapsed...I think we all tend to take things for granted, but when we hear of a tragedy like this, it makes you stop and think of all that we have.... Prayers going out to all those affected.

Terrific artwork in the composition and poignant sentiment in your narrative, Carin. Extremely unusual for an earthquake to hit in that part of the world. Since no one in the area ever prepared for that eventuality, that is one of the reasons there is so much death and devastation.

Striking image Carin and I had to look up the Haiti earthquake as my little guy doesn't let me watch the news anymore. It looks horrible and it could happen to any of us at anytime I guess.

Oh, this is a fantastically stunning piece of photography! Perfect work! This goes beyond a mere photograph and stands as something moving and stunning in its own right. And then to use it as a heart-felt dedication to those who need a lot more than they're going to be getting! WOW! Incredibly touching! This is sensitive and perfect work on every possible level!

An outstanding image and dedication. I've been watching coverage during the day and have gone through feelings of heartbreak, being inspired and disgust today. Heartbreak for the death and devastation in this poor country, Feeling inspired for my country's rapid response to the tragedy and disgust because one public person claims the Haitians brought this on themselves because they made a pact with the devil to win their independence from France while another has suggested our response was done for political gain. I cannot remember a time when I felt both proud and ashamed of being an American on the same day.

I am with you wholly on the earthquake. It's the most impoverished nation in this hemisphere (the americas) and its impoverishment meant poor building codes, horrible destruction and poor infrastructure to fight the effects of the destruction. It's a wrenching combination. And hard to respond to a picture like this properly, since it's for people who are suffering greatly. But somehow you caught both the fury of disaster & a transcendent light & power beyond it, as if to say that beyond this catastrophe, light still remains. The upper clouds are sheer painting, the lower one is resplendent, and the silhouetted tree & ground are almost like the victims--bold, reaching but in darkness. A powerful image in its own right, and a powerful dedication to the lost & injured of Haiti.
