Description

Whether it's an amorphous, strangling gas cloud, Klingon intruders or salt craving monsters -- when there's trouble on deck six of the USS Enterprise it's always the poor kid with the red shirt and no stripes on her sleeve that's going to take the brunt of it. DAZ Studio render with postwork in Photoshop. DAZ Victoria 4 with Marie morphs and textures. Classic Bob hair with OmniFreaker's uber hair shader. pwSurface2 on the skin and cloth. Star Trek outfit is DAZ's dynamic cloth 'Queen of Ages' with free ST textures by JamesJAB. These textures are simply rockin' and he's doing TOS textures for several different outfits for Vicky 4 and Mike 4. Highly recommended for the anyone wanting to do original Trek renders. Check out the "Star Trek Builder" thread in the 'Commons' forum at DAZ. Phaser from Xcalpro, yes it's scaled a bit big, deliberate and for effect. Small girl + big gun = more drama :) Deck Six corridor is almost entirely DAZ Studio primitives. I pulled a reference picture of a 60's Star Trek hallway on Google and then built some Trek like structures from boxes, cylinders and planes. The orange thing on the wall is a large generator from a set I got at DAZ (Nightshift 3D) rescaled and repainted. The hexagon grid is a plane with a transparency map. Lighting started out as Dreamlight Basic Studio lights. I played with the colors and added an uberEnvironment light for fill. I had originally lit the scene with the warmer colors coming in from the left and the cool colors on the right. The image really started to pull together when I switched these... pointing the cool lights at her face and rim lighting her with the warm colors. This increased the sense of menace from the unseen danger in the scene enormously. I also experimented with having various tentacles and things coming at her from behind, but I found that leaving the 'trouble' to the imagination of the viewer gave the scene a lot more impact. The dynamic cloth was run in multiple simulations with several different cloth presets before I got something I really liked. I think I ended up going with a cotton knit preset. I applied the figure's pose and morphs over 15 frames and ran the cloth sim as an animation to give it time to settle. Once I got a drape I was satisfied with, I froze the simulation. This converts the dynamic cloth to a static obj. I applied SubD to it to smooth the mesh even further and SubD'ed the hair as well. Image was rendered at 1920 x 1440 on an overnight render with very high quality settings. Postwork in Photoshop included fixing a very few poke-through issues and correcting some awkward wrinkles in the outfit. I also overpainted the hair a little bit to smooth things out and add some extra detail. I did a levels adjustment and bumped the saturation a bit. I also added a layer of grain to smooth out my postwork and did the titles and a little framing. All in all a fun project. I really enjoyed trying to replicate the look and feel of Star Trek's set design lighting and camera work without being 100% accurate in the details... more of "Trek as I remember it" than "Trek as it was." As always, please feel free to leave any constructive critique and suggestions for improvement. Comments to the effect that I'm way too much of a Trek nerd will be met with the derision they deserve.. but beyond that - have a ball! Live Long and Prosper! --m

Most impressive recreation of the 60's TV style lighting and camera angle!!!

This actually comes across very, very well. It's almost more Trek than Trek was. Very much the look/feel of the show but far better on the eyes as it's not viewed on an old tube. All in all a great render.

As an old trekkie, I'd say you've got the feeling just right! I like everything except her hair. I kinda want it to be a '60's look but even if you want to go more modern, this hair is hanging too much in her eyes and is a bit helmety looking. The angled camera and the FX lighting are perfect!

Done very well! I agree with Tholian, and the rest, this is a very impressive recreation! Too bad about the expendable crewman though, she's kinda cute.

I really like everything about this! Great work recreating the vintage Trek set, and your characters outfit, pose and expression really sell it. Excellent work all over!

Well, I was rather young when the series ran the first time...but have loved the re-runs and I think you have captured the feeling wonderfully!! This is a great job!! Great post, nice position of the fingers on the phaser, nice shadow from the grate in the background.... Great job!

Being a LONG time Star Trek fan I have to say that this image is absolutely fabulous! You did a GREAT job with this. The lighting, the skin textures, the background - superb! I chuckled about your comment on the ones in the red shirts always bearing the brunt of the trouble because my wife - Erestorfan - an myself have always noticed that. When ever we saw a non-regular character in a red shirt we would always say "Oh, he's (or she's) not gonna make it". LOL. Great job and a definite favorite.

I wonder how much Red Shirts pay in life insurance premiums... Excellent capture of the way Trek is remembered. Except maybe the colors where brighter (or our TV was wonky -- I need to get me some collector set DVDs) Great expression and pose. My only question is about the vertical creases on the uniform. Don't know if that's a dynamic cloth artifact or a deliberate effect.

You're way too much of a Trek nerd - can I join your club? :o) Excellent image - I fear that the unknown danger is going to take yet another rookie after a single episode...

love the lighting, especially the patterned shadow. nice dynamic work. the materials on the shirt are a close match to the show. keeping the danger off-stage was a good choice.

Very nice. Your mastery of the lighting technique is awesome. Definately give a feeling of weight, good posing and composition. The shadows from the caged area lends to the suspense.
