Description

Hello-- it's been a while! Lately, I've been finding myself completely uninspired and unhappy with what little work I've managed to begin. Last time this happened I managed to claw my way out with some landscape work. Let's see how this goes... "Desolation" came about because of a tutorial Dax Pandhi came out with for combining the terrain features of Vue with the erosion modeling in World Machine. This is pretty much a straight up technique study from that tutorial. Without giving too much away.. I created a procedural rock strata terrain in Vue, tweaked it to my liking and exported as a high res .tga height map. In World Machine I imported the height map and ran an erosion node over it. I went pretty heavy on the weathering and the actual 'build' took well over an hour, but I found the results to be pretty impressive. Then I exported the result along with a flow map. I brought these back into Vue and used the flow map to control the distribution of the sand and rock. I added an ecosystem of pebbles to the sandy areas to give some texture. If you want to know more, I definitely recommend the Quadspinner/Dax Pandhi tutorials available at E-On and Cornucopia. He's really helped me up my game in Vue! Vue 8.5 render with global radiosity lighting. Rock material from the Quadspinner 'Mineral Infinity' collection. As I said, this is a technique study that I thought I'd share. You comments and critique are always most welcome.

Thanks (again!) for the informative description of how it's done. It's a nice picture and the explanation really helps me appreciate what I'm looking at.

This looks like it needs a Jupiter II streaking through the sky.

it's always great to see your posts, but even better to read about your process. after reading, i had to look at the full size version again. i think the hard work paid off well. some of the rocks in the mid-ground seem kind of smoothly structured, but overall the effect is marvelous. i wish i could speak more intelligently about landscapes like this, but i like the drama of the shapes and the various textures. i think the only improvement i could imagine would be more layering and variation with the texture of the rock and sand.
