Description

Ice boats are in Oshkosh for the Northwest Ice Yacht Association Regatta being held off of Fugleberg boat landing. The N.I.Y.A. Regatta will be held January 29, 30, and 31. A iceboat, once called an ice scooter, is a boat similar in appearance to a sail boat but fitted with skis or runners (like skates) and designed to run over ice instead of water. Iceboats commonly used for racing are usually only for one person. However, several classes of two seat iceboats are common. On some boats, a side car can be fitted to take others along for a ride. Which could be so cool on so many levels. Traditional iceboats from the late 19th century were used for transportation and racing. These boats reached lengths of 30 to 50 feet and were transported between sites on rail cars. Sailing was done in several locations where the sport continues today with active clubs, including the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, Detroit, Michigan, Sandusky, Ohio, Gull Lake, Michigan, Geneva Lake, Wisconsin, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Ghost Lake, Alberta and others. This annual regatta recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. I snapped several shots while they were coming in on Friday. When I came home from work, Dave said don’t take your coat off and grab your camera. Once again I missed the race this morning, but thanks to Dave still got to see these awesome vehicles glide over the icy lake. Dave and I had volunteered to run concessions and my son's high school for the team dance competition today. The dance team is considered a athletic team, and the booster club has all the sports and teams in the school's events to run concessions for. We, with our third counter part, a soccer mom, were a dynamic team. Thanks Dave for helping out! Job update: Still hunting for a new job. My blood pressure is just terrible, but only while I am doing those reports. Are you wondering how I know this? Ok, Thursday when I got home from work I was really agitated and snapping on everybody, which I normally never snap on anyone. Dave realized something was wrong and I grabbed my battery operated blood pressure kit and found myself on the verge of a stroke, I know not good. It explained the really bad nose bleed right before I left work and half way home. I took my kit with me and wore the cuff all day. I set it to go off if it registered a change and to record it. I hit the reports that drive me crazy and apparently my blood pressure too. The thing went nuts. It was going off every five minute and my blood pressure was on the rise. I have to find another job soon, I seriously can’t take this. Ok back to the hunt. I thought you would so like to see this. Much love and peace, Cheri

You know, here in the south, I can't recall the last time I saw someone drive out on the lake, er well not on purpose anyhow! Great capture!

Yeah, this really looks like the car is driving across the water. No thanks, I'll walk or watch from the shore. Get your doctor to issue you a perscription for some blood pressure medication. I use Benazapril and my pressure is normal with it. Untreated high blood pressure damages the body even without a stroke.

Re-writing the comments - the picture reminds me of the SF novel by Alan Dean foster, 'Icerigger' and what they use the ice ships for especially the single person ships. You get a chance, read it, I think you'll like it! Great photo BTW and I hope you find a new and better job soon!

Beautiful color and clarity! Very odd to see the car on the water. I agree with Mark. You need to get that high blood pressure controlled. Take care of yourself.

Wow, they look they're scooting along on water. Hence, that auto really looks out of place. Stellar long distance shot, Cheri, and, above all, take good care of yourself! You're flirting with danger here.

We've had some really really cold weather here of late, following a thaw, so the ice on the lake is pretty pure, and looks like a mirror out there. It really did look like the truck was driving across the water!!! Look Bambi, the water's stiff!!! They had canceled this last year because the ice was so thin, no chance of that this year, today we had a high temp of 10, of course with the wind chill it felt like a minus 15. It's supposed to warm up here about midweek, getting all of the way up to maybe 28!! I'm getting out my shorts! I appreciate everyone's concerns and tips for Cheri's high blood pressure, I personally think she's going to be in need of some stress relief, and maybe learn how to deal with that better. I've never been one much for the drug thing, they seem to mostly deal with the symptoms and not cure the problems. I may draw a bit of heat here, but I firmly believe stress is a choice thing, and we can learn to deal with it in a way that doesn't affect us in a negative way.

Outstanding composition...lovely blue! I don't know if you like beets but they are a natural source for lowering blood pressure. I know a lady in her mid-70s with high blood pressure and she eats beets every day and it has helped her alot. You might want to look into it.

Very cool picture! Our lake freezes on occasion, but nothing like this! Speaking of freezing, we have to dig out from our latest "dusting"....12 inches of snow! The weather folks got this one wrong......

What a fascinating image! I've never seen these before. It doesn't get cold enough here to freeze the lakes. Amazing! Of course the best thing to do for high blood pressure is avoid stress, but until you can do that, please don't neglect to see a doctor! Taking medication would never be a first choice, but it's better than trying to manage it on your own and continuing to have problems. You take good care of yourself, sweetie! Loads of love from out here ...

These look soooo.... cool and such fun. They remind me of the sand yachts we have here. I hope you will take the above advise and go and see your Doctor as there are a lot of drugs out there for blood pressure. I have been on one for years now and they surely made a huge difference to my life. Good luck on the job change but that can bring more pressure and by the sounds of it you don't need that at this time.

This does look like great fun. But I have to say the most amazing thing about this shot is the CAR on the ice!! Good luck with your hunt, but most of all, take care of yourself. Easier said than done sometimes, I know.

Avoid stress...breathe...and transport at least a part of yourself elsewhere when the job stresses get to the point where you've venting blood from your nose! I really wish I could help with the job thing, but I'm looking as well! This is a fantastic image and I would love to see these babies for myself! I imagine they'd make a nice "whooshing" noise as they glide over the ice. Though they aren't similar, they remind me (vaguely) of the sand-ships in Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles. This is great work!

I figure about 55 years since I was on one of these. Great shot and share. Wonderful memories. Please take care of yourself. Dana
