Description
There is a building in downtown Los Angeles called The Mayan. Built in 1927 as a Hollywood approximation of a Mayan Temple, it originally hosted live theatre. As the neighborhood changed it then showed second run movies. In the 1940's, the theatre was a burlesque house and it is rumored that in 1948 a young Marilyn Monroe appeared here. The theatre became an adult porn theatre in the early 1970's. Some years ago, when the new owners were renovating the old building to create a nightclub featuring salsa music, I went down to take some pictures. The on-site foreman noticed me and invited me inside. Opening one of the exit doors I found this mural on the wall of the alley. Sueno is the Spanish word for Dream.

Our downtown has so many murals, many with a Mexican influence. When a building is renovated, the murals are generally kept and restored or, sometimes, the entire wall is removed and relocated in another building. Very nice find here.

Fascinating history and a wonderful shot. Glad it survived all that time. Your shot is really dramatic especially with that light, it really does appear as a dream. I love it.

Oh, this is a priceless capture! I love the intensity of the expression and the texture of the wall and the shadows. I love it when rare finds surface like this and the little graffiti tags are a perfect touch. The histories of buildings are always interesting, and maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I really like the fact that this was once a porn palace! How odd. This is--yet again--great work.
