Description

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 April 15, 1865) served as the 16th President of the United States. He led his country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, preserving the Union and ending slavery. He was the first Republican president and the first American president to be assassinated. . The Lincoln Memorial was built to honor Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, DC and was dedicated on May 30, 1922. The architect was Henry Bacon and the sculptor of the main statue, the photo I have posted tonight, was Daniel Chester French, in 1920. The Monument is in the form of a Greek Doric temple. It is on 107.43 acres (0.43 km²) site, that was swampland , when selected in 1902. The building is Indiana limestone and Yule marble from Marble, Colorado. The statue is made of Murphy marble from Tate, Georgia. Forty eight states, of the United States, are carved along the outside attic walls. If you have a $5 bill in your wallet, you can see those names. A plaque in front of the monument commemorates the admission of Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. This statue stands 19 feet 9 inches (6 m) tall and 19 feet (6 m) wide, and was carved from 28 blocks of white Georgia marble, in the Bronx, New York. Today, over 3.6 million people visit the memorial annually. This photo was taken in the early 1970s and recently scanned. Some information from Wikipedia. IN THIS TEMPLE AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENSHRINED FOREVER Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Honest Abe always looked so dour and serious...maybe it's because he was so tall and had a lot to deal with. Great picture; it captures the monument and the man. OK, that sounds a little bit hackneyed but oh well. This is a great shot. I really like it a lot.
