Description

A Valentine for all of you with this young pair of lovers walking on one of the bridges on the Saone River (the other river crossing the city is the Rhone). In front of them there is Fourvière, the location for Notre-Dame de Fourvière, the Disneyan 19th century neogothic basilica on the top of the hill. On the left you can see the top of the Medieval cathedral and the Old Lyon area at the foot of the hill. Using the language of the law courts for the rituals of courtly love, a High Court of Love was established in Paris on Valentine's Day in 1400. The court dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. Judges were selected by women on the basis of a poetry reading. The earliest surviving Valentine is a 15th-century rondeau written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife, which begins: 'Je suis desja d'amour tanné/ Ma tres doulce Valentinée…' (I'm already fed up with love, my very sweet Valentinée). At the time, the duke was being held in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt, 1415. A bit of postwork helped (I hope) to give a special mood to the shot. Very romantic, perfect for Valentine's Day. I did not know that women had any rights in the 15th century. It seems Europe was quite advanced in some areas even then.
