Description
Military version of the Douglas DC-3 and the paratrooper transport version of the C-47.
The DC-3 was one of Douglas Aircraft's most successful production models.
Debbielove's posting of his C-47 in flight yesterday reminded me of these fotos in my files.
Captured back on 10/27/08, at the 7th Annual Wings Wheels Rotors & Expo, held at the beautiful Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) in beautiful Los Alamitos, California.
Much better viewed full size.
Fixed metal seats, no large cargo door, no reinforced floor or astrodome. Could carry up to 28 fully-armed paratroopers.
Average cruising speed: 174mph.
Two Curtiss-Wright 1200hp R-1820-56 engines.
Original cost of the aircraft: $109,505.
Dwarfed by the C-53D in photos 1 & 2 is the legendary US Army Air Corps Piper L-4F Grasshopper (civilian: J-3 Cub), which I will post pictures of later.
Ta-ta, and thankx for the peek.

Terrific collage, Harry! Cool plane.

Super collage Harry. Having the piper in the shots was a great size comparison. Love the nose art. A lost art. Dana

You see! This is what its ALL about... You should be able to get near and scene and feel the plane.. Not like in the UK where they keep you 7 miles away.. And you need a magnifying glass to spot the aircraft! Blame our Government and manic Health & Safety laws! This is beautiful! Outstanding! Rob

Oh I love the D Day Doll! Beautiful captures Harry:-) I did my abstracts and used the old pinup girls from that time in the images long ago, when I was first starting out. And my uncle had a picture of himself by his plane that had a lady painted on it too. I've forgotten now why they did that back then but it was very cool I thought!
