Description
The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 in Reseda, a neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, California at a magnitude of 6.7. I remember being awakened at 4:30 a.m. as my building swayed back and forth. Seventy-two deaths were attributed to that earthquake. Two days later I visited UCLA. The plaster had fallen away in some places and the walls looked as if they were bleeding.
An 8.8 earthquake struck the nation of Chile two days ago with a death toll of over three hundred. The number is likely to rise. Please keep Chile and Haiti in your prayers.

Very poignant and in my thoughts.

Such human tragedies, and in England, something that we never encounter, but nevertheless human tragedy is something we should all encompass in thoughts and action. Thanks for posting this, it brings it all into focus.

A most appropriate image for this appalling event.

It looks like you're on your way to being awake at 4:30am yet again, Mark. ;-) This is a great image. It's documentative and at the same time it also feels like abstract art. I guess if I were hit by a 6.7 earthquake my walls would be bleeding too! It is always good to focus our attention with posttive intent to those hurting or in crisis. This was a excellent way to do that and inspire others towards the same. Stay safe out there!.. 'seems the whole rim has been moving about these past few days. Terry

I remember the Northridge quake myself, and I also vaguely recall the Landers in '92 (7.3). You'd think you get used to quakes at such frequency, but the bigger ones always leave their marks. Very moving image, and my thoughts and best wishes are with the victims and their families.

Very sad news. Nice tribute and a reminder of how fleeting life can be. We can do noting about nature but we can donate our money to help. Thanks Mark.

It has risen. So much sorrow and now the tragedies that accompany these happenings, when food and fresh water is hard to deliver to those who have survived. Very nice tribute. Excellent image to show how fragile are man made structures against nature's fury.
