Description

This view of the Pto. Montt harbor is from Angelmo, about 3km west of Pto. Montt city center. NAVIMAG Ferries haul cargo and provide passenger service between Pto. Monto and Puerto Natales a little over 1100km south of here. Pto. Montt is about 550km south of Concepcion, the nearest city to the epicenter of the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake last weekend. The quake was strong enough to create a tsunami and countries around the Pacific Ocean as far away as Japan, Australia and Hawaii took the necessary precautions. The tsunami was recorded along the California coast as well as in Hawaii and Samoa, were it did some damage. Fortunately it was not very destructive and only a foot or two were recorded in most instances. Unfortunately the communities near the epicenter along the coast of Chile were not as lucky. There wasn't enough lead time to warn these towns and in Constitucion, about 160km north of Concepcion, a reported 50-ft. wave essentially destroyed the town with much loss of life. Other coastal communities received heavy damage also, but I have not heard whether Pto. Montt, Niebla at the mouth of the Rio Valdivia (about 320km south of Concepcion), or Valparaiso and Vina del Mar to the north received any damage. This picture was taken on 26 December 2003. Thank you for viewing, commenting, and favs, Sig...

Una visione bella e tranquilla che speriamo sia ancora tale ! Troppi avvenimenti tragici in poco tempo !!! A vision that we hope will be nice and quiet yet so! Too many tragic events in no time!

What a great shot. I love the contrast between the small boats, the huge ferry, and the military vessel.

Wonderful image! I love the cranes ... they look like geckos with fishing poles or something. (Once seen, it's hard to UN-see these things! LOL!)
