Description

Chicago, near home, January 31 2010. * * *
I haven't gotten to all of you yet--but I will! It takes me a long time to comment, but I won't miss any of you I promise!
* * * Have a fine weekend! Mark
(The ice from my last shot, here, came from miles of lake-ice crashing into the shore, then being flooded with fresh-water, then freezing! That's why it's so rocky. I'll post the whole lake covered in ice soon...)

WOW! Mark ! You got such a special light in this fantastic capture. And these 2 buildings from each their own time, made of each their own meaterials makes an amazing play against eathother. It is like the picture is saying, OH yes, new buildings are coming up, but the old beautiful architecture is still the most beautiful and will last forever. :-) Like old furniture that last for ages, when the new keep nice for few years. So look the buildings here....atleast to me. :-D I just love this shot.

This is a brilliant juxtaposition, you've got them organised just perfectly! Do you find yourself talking to them.. "just a little more to the left, if you would, that'll do nicely", like a wedding photographer? I do it all the time, doesn't half put the birds off, which is why you won't find many avian shots in my gallery! And these two compelentary colours make it even more of a stunner..one so warm and the other ice-cool..MARVELLOUS!

I am like Helle and absolutely love this photo Mark. You really must have pondered a while on finding the perfect point of view and considered so much. The contrast in new and old is just one of the highlights in a list of many. They work so well to help define each other and the shared lighting here is almost inspirational.

Hi Mark. Sorry, I just commented on this neat posting of yours using another Rendo member's computer and wound up sending you that comment with the wrong avatar and name...so, this will be a little shorter but you'll know who sent it. LOL. All above have already said this, but yes the contrast of the old and the new is the heart and soul of this well done photo image. I am guessing but the church could well be late 19th century. I'll also wager that the tallest buildings downtown probably didn't go above 10 stories. So here in one shot and within one block you've captured a sample of the change that's come over your home town in the last 120 years. But so much for subject, you've once again handled the light so well...the oversaturated brightness of the eastern, morning sky contrasting with the receding blueness of the western sky. Superb. What's not to like?

It's a beautiful capture; I also love the sky! And the buildings look like they're rubbing shoulders in a most companionable fashion. Well done, Mark!

Uber terrific POV utilized to capture the stunning perspective, architecture, clarity, detail, lighting and colors in this foto of the old orange edifice starkly contrasted against the ice cube tray-looking skyscraper soaring its way into the heavens, Mark!

What a great contrast--and they lined up SO nicely for you!! I like the pieces of the other buildings as well, as though they were saying, "Pick me, pick me, here I am"! Like a bunch of kids, they all want to be in the front row!!

Gorgeous view! I love the old and the new like this and the colors are marvelous. It's as if a building was put in one of those time lapse movies (like the ones that show flowers opening) and we can see how Chicago has evolved over the years. We should all shout a big thank you to whomever gave you that camera because they knew what they were doing. It's in good hands.

You really did catch a wonderful contrast of design with this capture. Amazing that they can both get along together. I have two schools of thought. I love the texture of the church and its oldness, but I also love the smoothness and clean lines of the new building.

Fascinating view,Mark! The contrast is gorgeous! You seem you was born with a machine inside your eyes:)Your captures are always different even if they show similar places ...you do that with so creative eye ! The grandiosity of the old building against the new one, that is a giant...seems to me, more giant yet! because its own beauty and the "highlights" you gave to him. The detail of the buildings behind it all, make us feel the whole place ..a very well seen counterpoint!

I love that sunlight just blasting in from the right! I love the intricate warm beauty of the old against the stark cold beauty of the new. I love that the old will continue to look beautiful even as it ages more and more, while the new - well we've seen what happens to these new modern buildings as they age. Not so beautiful. I love how the hard angular lines of the man made city on the right become the soft curved lines of Nature's tree on the left. Somehow all these cotnrasts marry together so beautifully.

Well! I guess if your bots say I left a comment and then erased it, you'll know it wasn't me! LOL! I just now saw this. Your shot has me wondering about a lot of things. The church spires seem to be reaching toward the heavens (as they are wont to do) while the more modern building has just matter-of-fact-ly gone about its business, without a care in the world for what might or might not be up there. I'm sure there's some philosophical/spiritual insight there, but I'm too lazy to pursue it further. Just the beginning of an idea. My mind has already moved on, and now I'm interested in those little bay window things in the smaller building on the right. A fascinating image, full of fun things to look at and fun places for my mind to play!

I love the spires on that wonderful church, and the textures of the stone against the modern work of the other buildings. Of course I love that bare tree that seems to be a sentinel standing its watch over the church. The tallest building reminds me of a harmonica for some reason, lol! Very nice perspective again! Great architectural contrasts captured!

Come foto è perfetta; mentre come strutture architettoniche vicine rimango molto perplessa.Non so se mi piace, oppure no! :)

You are the master of juxtaposition! Crafted beauty vs bland functionality, warm stone vs cold glass and steel. And yet they both have their place...

Oh Mark, this is stunningly gorgeous. I love that juxtaposition and the whole mood of this. I'm particularly enamored at the way you've given the smaller structure as much emotional space as it's bigger, blander, sleeker cousin. That takes some doing and you've done it perfectly. The colors are stunning and I just love the lines in this. The POV is stellar and you actually managed to capture one of those non-gray-sky mornings. That in itself is quite a feat given Chicago's meteorological temperament lately. This is superb work!
