Description
Captured 3/13/10, at the Los Angeles Zoo, in Los Angeles, California.
A ZOOM will be to your everlasting benefit.
Four out of a total of 45 pictures I snapped of the flamboyant flamingo -- these not the pink plastic kind you find on front lawns -- as they live a life of leisure amidst an elysian environment.
---------------
Flamingos or flamingoes are gregarious wading birds in the genus Phoenicopterus and family Phoenicopteridae. There are four flamingo species in the Americas and two species in the Old World.
In Ancient Rome, flamingo tongues were considered a delicacy. Also, Andean miners have killed flamingos for their fat, believed to be a cure for tuberculosis.
The Moche people of ancient Peru worshipped nature. They placed emphasis on animals and often depicted flamingos in their art.

Lots of jostling among the crowd for good photo POV spots during much of my zoo visit. Too many people there during the weekend. Next time I'll go during the middle of the week, and hope for the best.
Au revoir, thankx for popping in, and for any and all complimentary comments and favs.

Looks like they're being fed the correct stuff, since their colours are so bright; yes, zoos on the weekends are not fun for photographers, I discovered on my recent visit to our zoo! You did well here, with this gregarious gang of gangly birds!

Platic ones on front lawns, Great Scott, how vulgar can it get! Your photos of the real thing are wonderful, however!

Wonderful images! Beautiful bright colors and busy scenes! I like the second one best. They all have their noses (excuse me, beaks) in the air, like someone has passed by that they don't want to acknowledge. They are funny birds and you've captured that excellently!

each shot is beautiful, and it's a bursting collection. The top one feels almost mythic--because the gathering, the angle, the way they seem to 'crest' near the tree, and the beautiful light-soaked hues make it feel like a scene from some kind of paradise. They all have that feeling, in fact. The second one has a shimmer-from above feel to it (it's beautiful), the third with more closeup has more radiant light, and the fourth you've caught all kinds of complex twists & turns in the birds, an almost abstract, lush piece. Your light is exquisite. A teeming collection of bird shots. When this went up I was just doing my first bird shots, and when I saw this I thought, whoa, this man knows how to shoot birds. Urban birds will stand still because they're used to people (and want to be fed); I suppose zoo birds are somewhat acculturated too...but to get this kind of form and light takes experience. Beautiful work all around. And I can finally understand what it means to fight crowds to get pictures. Even in urban areas like this--a very dense area--you want to scream, "I'm shooting here!" (Like Dustin Hoffman's "I'm walkin' here!") You wish there were a law...
