Description

(Bug Comic) (This is earlier on Friday, around noon when Mrs. Kim was thinking of going for lunch, Bryan was still grading tests, and after Rain's hat shopping.) ------------- And here is Bryan's Library Angel. It's a big tacky marble statue of Saint Michael (God's Brass Knuckles, as a Catholic friend of Bryan's put it), and it's in the back lobby of the Law Library, down the hall from Mrs. Kim's office. (There is a matching statue of Justice in the front lobby, but Bryan isn't keen on that one--when he was little, her blindfold scared him, since she has a sword too, but can't see where she's swinging it). And she has no shirt. Bryan found St. Michael on a day when he was four years old, and Mrs. Kim had to take him to work. He then wandered out of her office, climbed up the 2 story velvet drapes in the front lobby to look at a moth, got stuck at the top, and Mrs. Kim had to get a ladder to get him down, She told him he "needed a guardian angel", told him not to climb drapes anymore, and go find a book. Instead he found St. Michael, and came running back to tell Mrs. Kim that she didn't need to worry, he'd found an angel. (This is probably what started his angel fixation, too.) Rain isn't impressed by the statue--there's no hand guard on the sword, and he was more interested in the light above the statue, and how it's lit so evenly (there is an LED panel behind it). He's also slightly lost--he's trying to figure out which side of the building he's in, and he feels foolish because instead of using the map to find the building, he was following his nose...or rather the scent of book bindings, paper, glue, mold and disinfectant that means a public library. (Aer were designed to be hunters, so they have an excellent sense of smell, which in Rain's case makes up for his myopic IR vision.) So while he's trying to work the map, Mrs. Kim is coming down the hallway to see what he's doing. (She smells like jasmine tea and expensive soap).

A fabulous St. Michael! But I'm with Rain, I wonder why "God's brass knuckles" doesn't have something to defend his own? I'm also wondering why that beautiful rose window has a Canadian maple leaf in the middle! ;) Outstanding artwork, as usual, my friend! Bravo!

Great looking picture, I like the statue and the whole scene. Nice work on the pose, and I'm kind of wondering too about the Canadian flag in the middle of the skylight. Nice work, Lynn!

Wow--excellent work. I love the detail and sense of scale in this. I always screw up scale. Impressive job on that statue. Love the tidbits you throw in on character definition. I'd love to see a full book on this comic.

I wish my house was big enough for a statue like this... :) This is wonderful, Lynn, I like how the wings feathers correspond to the pattern in the ceiling... Simply great picture!

sorry it's taken me so long to comment on this. i love the light, though my eye expects some of the softer gradations and lower contrast of realistic shadows. i'm sure it's a false distinction, but i feel like you've caught the beauty of indirect light in a very open room while the shadows remain a little harsh. the light marble is lovely and classical, but the gold and multi-colored stone make it just fit your description of "tacky." i like that blend, because in a way it's like the series as a whole: incredibly artistic with enough elements of the ridiculous, humorous and just plain human to be friendly rather than remote. the outfit is very cool. and i love the details, in this, and how Rain is incidental to the composition.
