Description

Captured 5/12/10, at beautiful Legg Lake in the beautiful Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in not-so-beautiful South El Monte, California. Better viewed full size. At this juncture I would like to clear up any misconceptions on the behavior of the geese at this park/lake, vis-a-vis their attitude toward humans. I've received comments saying to watch it because these creatures are angry at any intrusion upon their territory and/or well being and are going to take a sharp bite out of my butt. That may be true elsewhere but not at this place. These particular critters have had so much exposure to humans coming to the area explictly to feed them, that they've become domesticated and people friendly. On two visits to the area, I've sat and walked right in the middle of them, closeup and personal, intensely snapping fotos, and not once was there a hostile act perpetrated toward my bod. They didn't even care if I walked amidst their little chicks and goslings. Of course, there's a lot of raucous honking, posturing and intimidation going on, but that's strictly between the birds. To them, people = being fed, and are not a threat. The same thing with koi. Anyway, I must have taken around 800 shots between the two visits to the park, so it's nonstop postwork for a while, my friends. Coffee, more coffee! Sayonara, thankx for popping in, and for any and all complimentary comments and favs.

Oh, I really like this shot; the lighting is fantastic, which is not always the case when the sun is overhead like that. The babies look so alert and curious, and the parents look proud... Well done you!

This is a lovely family! I like the little guy who dares to be different and has his head tilted slightly to the side. Beautiful detail, reflections and grouping!

Nice shot! Where I go to photograph these geese they are not fed and are quite wary of people, perhaps because many come with their dogs. They don't let their goslings come near so some years I don't see them until they are 5 or 6 weeks old. Their aggression is usually aimed at other birds, and they're constantly chasing others out of their territory. In the same area the terns chase any herons or crows that come near, and the American Coots chase the seagulls. I only wish someone would chase the seadooers.

So, Harry, is this your version of a chick flick? LOL. My first thought was of a battleship, a cruiser and a gaggle of destroyers...not yet in formation. Anyway, well done my friend.

A beautiful family portrait! Excellently caught Harry, well lit . Just about perfect. Really great work here.. :-) Geese are naturally noisy things.. I used to work at a Wildfowl Reserve.. And when you have caught and handled Geese and Swans everyday, you realise its mostly all noise.. Rob
