Description
Fifty-five miles south of San Francisco, between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay lies Año Nuevo State Park. The Spanish maritime explorer Sebastian Vizcaino sailed by the point on January 3, 1603. His diarist and chaplain of the expedition, Father Antonio de la Ascension, named it Punta de Año Nuevo (New Year's Point) for the day on which they sighted it in 1603.
The little swirl over the n is called a tilde (til-dee). It is a very important component of Spanish. With it the name of the park is ‘New Year’. Without it the park becomes ‘New Anus’. Make sure you pronounce it correctly.
Año Nuevo State Park is the site of the largest mainland-breeding colony in the world for the northern elephant seal. It is approached after a mile hike over sand dunes. My first view was a great disappointment. The beach appeared to be covered with rocks, beige rocks. Not a seal in sight. Until one of them moved. These were female elephant seals waiting for the males to arrive.

Cool shot and wonderful information! and the humor, though I don't think the feamle elephant seals would appreciate being called rocks

Though I've forgotten most of the Spanish I have learned, it would seem odd to say año without the ñ sound. I'm glad that's so. I would have hated to have wished someone a happy new year in a less than appropriate manner. Great images! They do rather resemble rocks. A nice lazy day at the beach, until those noisy fellows come along.

Super shots in this collage. That is a lot of blubber. Dana

"Until one of them moved." It's a damn good thing they're not carnivorous ... or you'd have never returned to share your experience with us. ;-) It's nice that you are able to get up close to them. These are really nice and they well convey just how adept an optical illusion these gals make. Looks like a really fun outing. Terry

Now those bathing beauties really know how to relax! What great shots. Worth every step of the mile walk. Thanks for hiking.
