Description
Well Carin, since it's winter down there, I decided to post a WINTER shot rather than a summer one---for your birthday! This is hard-core Lake Michigan ice! But I don't post it because it's dark & cold, but because it's exotic & beautiful (in person), and because it was melting into beautiful waves that morning. That's why I post it. And because...well...it's the closest I can come to your wonderful & always personal photography. I've not had the pleasure of knowing you the way my RR friends have, but the second-hand knowledge has glowed! Everyone speaks of you as a wonderfully kind, loving, highly intelligent & also very funny person, and everyone just loves your photography. I've seen all of those things & I also love your photography! As for your work, you give us beautifully composed shorelines, sunrises, forests, gardens, all kinds of lanterns, streets, architectural captures, and of course those beautiful Namibian desert-scapes: And there's a "Carin" touch in all of them---your mystery & intense presence, your wholly easeful way with B&W, the way you make simple things seem like an inner journey of the heart & how you capture all kinds of joy & glee...and your always loving words & embrace for all of us. So for me & all your friends here, let me say thank you for the love & support you bring to us, for your constant presence in so many different galleries, for your work on the Forum, and for your beautiful & always intensely personal work. You're the kind of artist it's a pleasure to see wherever you are on this site, and I'm so happy to call myself a friend. Belated Happy Birthday, Carin, and many many more! Love & light to you, Mark

Right-on for a timely southern hemisphere seasonal greeting. I like the smoothness of Lake Michigan ice...it has the same comfortable softness (in looks anyway) and light as does a photo and/or a message from Carin. Wonderful words summing up what we see and hear with each of Carin's daily postings. Well done Mark.

Oh wow Mark - I am so humbled by your words that I'm actually all choked up, teary and with no words forthcoming! (and I am NOT often without words!!!!) take a deep breath, sniff away the tears, ok... ready Thank you dear friend for your kind words and birthday wishes. I am making them my own and will live them in the years to come! They are way too precious to go to waste!!! Now the image - WOW! First the light... I just love the little jewels of early morning light dancing on the water and ice. They give me the impression of great things to come - a new day, new hope! The calmness of the water is soothing with the slighter roucher waters in the back... Almost like it is saying - the storm has passed! The ice in the foreground doesn't make me cold - in fact - it has the opposite effect! It warms me as I know it is busy melting away to become one with the calm waters!! There is so much symbolism in this marvelous image!!! Thank you so very much Mark!!!! It is perfect!

Pretty cool lokin image mark has an almost alien and other worldly feel to the ice in the stat of melting looks incredible i mean if you had,nt told me it was ice I would be curios as to what it was. looks kinda like jelly fish or even some kind of toxic spillage!! great shot my friend!!

Mark, I'm so glad you chose to do a birthday dedi for Carin, as she is one of the kindest ladies in the gallery and deservers it so much. As always you put so much thought into it before starting as is evident by your choice of a winter shot since you knew it was winter there. Your thoughts on what a kind and caring lady she is was reflected so well in this lovely image.

I love this! The ice has a sheen to it that only comes with slowly melting ice. I know exactly how smooth and slick it would feel to the touch, how cold. What a gorgeous image, and a beautiful dedication! Happy Birthday, Carin!

This looks sooooo.... impressive and what a wonderful birthday greeting for Carin. I love how you have caught the sunlight on the water and the ice to give it a very different look. Also the water looks to be at 3 different levels each with its own texture and shape. A wonderful capture.

Fascinating to see this ice melting and becoming a part of the undulating waters. And such a heart-felt dedication. CC

I'm only into repetition when it comes to art and photos, so I'm going to weasel out on this and just state that anything and everything I was going to say vis-a-vis this magnificent foto and dedication has already been said above, Mark.

I know I'm late in viewing this but I think I've chosen a good time. It is hot and steamy here and this pic is very cool in many ways. The way the light bounces off the hard cold surfaces I can actually hear the snap of the ice cracking. I keep waiting for that frost to create a mist that rise up as the sun begins to melt the smallest layer on top. I really like looking at the 3 levels of fluid, almost like molten lava. Very nice image.... and very soothing.

Beautiful image and dedication for Carin! I don't know her well, but have seen her beautiful gallery and enjoyed her wonderful choices for the monthly photo challenge. There is so much to see in this image beyond the first gasp at its sheer beauty! In that first gasp, the black ripples against the steely blue and lit up by the sparkly pink highlights, the motion and stillness of the water. The ice all pushed together, makes me think of billowing clouds and I look for shapes. There are profiles and seals looking into the sky, but my favorite is the stepped farming that reminds me of images seen long ago in National Geographic.

It's 11:03 PM .. and the house is steaming hot. Outside it's a little better as there is a teensy breeze .. So this winter shot of ice is a delight! I can almost feel the cold pouring out of the photo! A marvelous shot, the ice has a sort of carved and polished stone look to it. Gorgeous and a lovely dedi to Carin, who I don't know at all. Hope her day was beautiful!

This is a superb image and dedication! All of it is astonishingly perfect. I've had many encounters with Lake Michigan Ice, but I've never seen it quite like this...well...I have, but not as intimately and not as wonderfully evocative. I've always imagined that water possesses a certain quality that might be described as "memory" from all of the drops of water that now compose the world's oceans, lakes, rivers, and even puddles, and when I saw this, I saw the ice taking on the qualities of those strange, stinging critters known as the Portuguese Man O' War...the ice looks like their gas bags with infant morning light shining through them; it has a fragile and graceful look and it's not impossible to imagine predatory, stinging tentacles underneath, drifting lazily on currents, just waiting to snag something tasty. For me this is quite a moving image as I tend to find comfort in nature's darker side...hmmm...maybe it comes from living with cats for so long and somehow equating predators with "cute" things. At any rate, there it is! I love it, especially since it's also a part of a heartfelt and quite moving dedication to one of my Renderosity Favorites! This is quite incredibly nice work!
