Description

There was a young couple outside of the Portland Market last weekend playing the sweetest music. It had a gypsy sound to it--and I stood there for a long time watching and listening to them. His accordion was gorgeous, red with mother of pearl. I never like to assume it's ok to take fotos of people, so I pointed to my camera when I caught his eye and he nodded his assent. But as things go, I ended up liking more of the parts than the whole!!

I think this composition in more compelling than a shot of both musicians would have been. This expresses the sound and enjoyment the music brought well.

Street musicians make great subjects...agree with Sea_Dog...like your take on this crop! How does one's fingers ever learn which buttons to push??? (this comment comes from a grade school band drop-out) :-)

I played one of these for a very brief time when I was 8; no musical talent ended my career! This is lovely!

Yeah I always ask strangers before I take there photo. Its polite, and you always get a much better photo! When it's a street performer I don't usually ask if they are playing but drop a coin into their collection. They never mind after that!

I had an uncle that used to play the accordion like an angel! I used to sit for hours and listen to him when I was a youngster! Wonderful shot of these instruments Marilyn!

You know, I'm one of those people who loves the accordion! There's something so intimate about them: I think I have associations of those central and east Europeans who use the accordion as a kind of social lubricant...if there's an accordion player around, there's gonna be a party. Count on it. Accordion music, especially if it's Gypsy-style is gonna get toes to tapping and eventually tables move aside to make an improvised dance floor. Accordions always remind me of that! I love the intensity of this shot too. And I love the fact that the accordion player has dreads! Yeah, way cool! Fantastic bits and pieces shot! If you like gypsy music with accordions, you might like Vera Bila...only she sings in either Czech or Roma...she's amazing, but you have to make up your own words for what she's actually saying.
