Description

There's a huge paved lot at Port Gamble where trucks used to be loaded, and it's blocked off by sections of log and chain. Apparently the logs (which are used as bollards) were under water at one time, because some of them had mussel shells, barnacles, and bits of salt rime encrusted in the tops. I was playing with my camera, trying to learn some of its secrets, working with depth of field. I got it in this shot ... you can see how the center shell is in perfect focus and the rest of the image is a bit blurred. That was all done in camera, and I was very excited to have figured it out! Unfortunately, now I have no idea what I did. LOL!

Superb DOF and a great sense of post-marine color! Well...post-marine since it's now dry or at least not submerged! Don't you just love playing with camera settings? My wee little souped-up point and shoot has settings I have yet to explore, but with stuff like this beauty of a shot just waiting to be discovered, I'm sure I'll pick up exploring again--right after I'm done with the "spin and jiggle" thing. I really like the textures in this and the open, hollow shells in that nice, bluish color. This is a marvelous shot!

We're so smart with our cameras at times aren't we? I read something in my camera owner's manual...go out and try it...then promptly forget it. You did great here...those are in fact tiny shells and the rotting log top provides great looking texture. :*

I have read my manual from front to back, used and tried it all and all I have retained is point and shoot. :-) DOF I have learned by using the super macro and the closer I get, the more DOF I get out of it. Now if I could just figure out the manual focus and the flash fill I'd have it made! LOL

Zoom is a must on this. Wonderful textures and shapes in the wood. I'll bet the mussels were surprised when the water disappeared.

The DOF is superb, highlighting the focal point of the shell. The light works very well in this regard too. My camera is always on the lowest f-stop I can get with the lens I am using. Very well done, Clive

Tara it is such a gorgeous shot. The rusty chain and wood and the shells. All together is makes a wonderful shot and the clarity in the center adds to it. You will find it again, I bet :-)

Yes, you got it; I also tend to shoot with the lowest F stop, unless I'm doing a big landscape shot...depends what you want. This is absolutely perfect, and I recognized it immediately!
