Description

My last post was of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge from back in April. This one was taken there as well last Saturday morning I got there around 7am and was hoping to go up Mount Scott and take advantage of the early morning light. But they don't open the drive until 9:00am. So to kill time I drove through the refuge. The Prairie Dog village used to be located not far from Mt. Scott but several years ago they moved it almost to the far side of the refuge. I found it yesterday and the Prairie Dogs were active much to my delight. I spent quite a while there one of them the one to the right in this shot came up to me probable looking for a hand out. Reading about Prairie Dogs they don't drink water they get their water from the vegetation they eat, so feeding them processed food can make them sick. Apparently some have been feeding them anyway. I believe that the three here are mom and her little ones; they stayed very close to her. They kept passing this brown leaf or what ever it is back and forth to each other very entertaining. Besides these two there were about 20 or 25 more that I could see but there were holed in the ground every where so there could have been more. These little guys made the wait worth while. I made it back to Mt. Scott about 10:30 am except for dodging so many people it was fun shooting up there, made for a good day of photography. Thanks for stopping by and any comments you care to leave. Thanks for the favorites on my last post, each comment, view and favorite is most appreciated. Royce

Wonderful capture! Amazing how stupid people are by trying to feed unnatural foods to the wild animals

I love the giant prairie dog. They have a great society going on for them and they are so fun to watch as you drive by their colonies. Great shot.
