Description

Built 100 years ago, out of use for the last 65, this coastal artillery battery has aged in graceful and not-so-graceful ways. This wall shows patches where graffiti was sprayed over, an abundance of black mold (ubiquitous in this area of the world), and the cracks of settling in. Battery Kinzie at Fort Worden in Washington State.

Superb find and what an interesting bit of history! This is unique and odd, yet so very beautiful and abstract-like! It certainly does provoke the imagination! Excellent artwork and capture Tara!

Your postwork truly adds to the old, worn look of this place. And your title evokes the same feel--wonderful shot!!

The postwork really enhances the roughness and age.

WOW! This is stunning! You know, I love a place that has graffiti and crumbling stone and mold! Ah, but I lived in Prague and remember many a bedroom window with garish fungal afros. (My first landlord suggested that if I saw mold growing in some unwanted place--like the corner above my cracked and wonky window--then I should just go on and put bleach on it...but not too much as it would cause an unpleasant smell. He reminded me of the father in My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding, putting Windex on any sore body part, only he was my not so big, not so fat Czech landlord...and true of many Praguers, more casual than thou. NOTHING fazed him! Ever! So, when I saw your reference to mold, I thought: eh, just put some bleach on it, that'll do the trick.) Now that I've rambled on, and on, and on about bleach and mold, I can now focus on the thing that started that ramble in the first place: this image! I love this kind of stuff and Chicago is so lacking in crumbly things with mold and graffiti only partly covered up. I love the vibe of this image, the way it shimmers and fades in and out like aged stone (or cement) but remains wholly intact, even as it crumbles. I love the rich range of grays and blacks with hints and whispers of blues. Quite nice and very, very moody. This is marvelous! Oh, and I noticed something else...stairs with no railings. How Czech!
