Description
hello to all, and thanks for taking the time to view my work. and a special thanks to those who take the time to comment.
as always, this image is from some time ago. don't worry, i'm almost through the backlog. this one is basically my dog waffle. this is where i really started experimenting with modeling stuff. i made everything but V4 and the dress, which is the same dress by tabala from my Fashion 01 image. this time i sculpted it to fit the figure.
it was fun to make all that stuff, and i tried lots of different methods. i used svg files i made in Illustrator for the hinges, used items arrayed along a path for the arch, used paths converted to mesh for the doors, and sculpted the decorations on the wall. it was definitely a learning experience, even if i didn't make anything useful to anyone else. i used way, way too many polygons, gave the shawl faulty topology, and generally messed everything up. but it was fun.
the whole scene was inspired, incidentally, by a work of Godward. i tried to get the marble to match his as much as possible, including the orange at the edges. i didn't really think about it, but it shows the connection i can see among Pre-Raphaelite, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco artwork.
the gold is awful, but that's because i failed at making a good faked environment. also, it's before bagginsbill shared his fresnel techniques with us. my latest gold is much better.

It's funny, I looked at the image before I read the comments, and the first thing I thought was that it had a sort of 1920's illustration look to it, but at the same time very modern and realistic lighting on the dress, though it's very subtle. I appreciate that you offset (oh so slightly) the line coming down the marble and the split at the door, and the line of the Guardian's body. To me the shawl is the most "modern" item, the way it clings is very sophisticated and complex, compared to the simple lines of the architecture and the stylized face. I kind of want a doll based on her head :) Another thing that is tiny, is that if I had done it, I would have moved her right index finger (the one on the pole) up so that it made a little C shape..probably because somewhere there is a Parrish or Pyle guard doing just that ! She looks more business- like and alert with it the way it is.

My first thought seeing this render before even reading a description was "Godward!" Beautifully tribute to a real master. She looks so majestic and strong yet feminine. Hey, I'm trying to learn to model myself so I know that "mess everything up' is a valid learning technique! ;) If you're interested in works of Godward,Bouguereau, Gérôme and others I highly recommend this site: http://www.artrenewal.org

Maybe it's because I'm peering at this image on my netbook from the wilds of Willits, Mendocino County, but it looks darn good to me, heck better than what I've been able to come up with. And yes, I have noticed that any metal render realism is strongly dependent on a good environment. Care to share yours? Looks much better than mine!

Speaking of art deco, with that character, the picture really reminds me of paintings by Gustav Klimt, one of my favorite artists. And again, your dynamic clothing amazes me.
mermaid
yep remembers me of Klimt too, very well done!
