Battle Over Phobos
An Orion’s Arm future history Image.
NOTE: Image and text updated 01/22/2013.
Network 4 News:
Reporting from Phobos City Main Concourse: At 0530 interceptor and missile batteries engaged the Alliance fleet.
Citizens of Phobos City have been ordered into the hardened bunkers.
The Port Complex and outer areas of the surface station have been evacuated. Orbiting commercial vessels are scattering away from the area of combat.
No official statement has been issued but, before jamming interrupted in-bound traffic, Network Four recorded eye witness reports from Nav-Com officers, their reports claim Mars surface installations have engaged elements of the Alliance forces in orbit. At the same time Mars Home Guard vessels opened fire on formations of the Earth Alliance Seventh Fleet.
Reports claim the Copernicus, the Demeter, and the Hood are powerless and burning in space. Other elements of the fleet are engaged in intensive combat operations.
This appears to be a unilateral action of Mars Defense Forces and Mars Senate House. There can be little doubt that, as of this report, we are at war …
Terraformed Mars texture created in Photoshop from NASA photographic resources.
All models are my own creations constructed in Bryce 6.3 and rendered in Bryce 7 Pro.
As always thank you for your interest, thoughtful comments, and encouragement.

WOWEE! That REALLY bumps it from very good to spectacularly outstanding! Phobos looks like a real place you can walk on instead of just another astronomical body passing by in the dark of space! Fantastic work.

Nice update If you check the NASA site, there might be some surface textures you can work with.

Very well done, sci-fi at it's best! Wonderful art!

Oh yeah, this one is excellent! The compression seems to have left artifacts, so that half terraformed mars looks great in the background. The base now is clearly part of the landscape and the ships stand out. Outstanding job. Obsession, or madness is a small price to pay...

Very much improved perspective. I like the richer color use to.

I thought the others were great, but you have excelled yourself here. The colouring on this one is perfection. The planet is out of this world magnificent. I run out of words here, but you get my meaning - you are the master of SF work and I doff my cap to you William

This is awesome!!!! ( BTW, I'm a little obsessive too ;-)!)

Obsession is a small, but vital part of what makes science fiction work, especially since science fiction doesn't really allow you to bend the rules--despite what Hollywood would have you believe. So, for me, a bit of obsession behind a piece of science fictional artwork is always the best way to get my attention. And in terms of this artwork: well...WOW! I love the details, the overall mood and the sense of realism that you've imparted to this piece. It's quite marvelous. I love the fact that Phobos has that irregular shape! The real Phobos is a bit potato-ish in appearance and I love it when a science fiction oriented artist actually shows that rather than a spherical, gray moon! In short, there's a lot in this to like, and I'm incredibly glad I saw it.
