Description
These are graffiti on a group of decorative brick columns supporting nothing at the opening of a little square among condos, more like an open, public courtyard, and a favorite by graffiti writers, homeless people and drug addicts during the night, because it's sheltered from the view, albeit it's downtown. During the day it's a shortcut for office clerks, housewives, students and the like. It's in Padova, Italy, not far from my home. Among the different graffiti I chose this one because it looks like the very famous expressionist painting The Scream by Norwegian painter Edvard Munch.
The original German title given to the work by Munch was Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream of Nature). The Norwegian word skrik is usually translated as scream, but is cognate with the English shriek. Occasionally, the painting has been called The Cry. In his diary in 1892, Munch described his inspiration for the image thus:'I was walking along a path with two friends - the sun was setting - suddenly the sky turned blood red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city - my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety - and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.' The environment of The Scream is often compared to that of which an individual suffering from Depersonalization disorder experiences, such a feeling of distortion of the environment and one's self. Edvard Munch created several versions of The Scream in various media. In the late 20th century, The Scream acquired iconic status in popular culture. As one of very few works of modern art instantly recognizable to a broad audience, The Scream has been used in advertising, cartoons, films and on TV. Ghostface, the murderer in Wes Craven's Scream horror movies, wears a Halloween mask inspired by the central figure in the painting. The work has also been used in political humor and in advertisements.

Marvelous shot!

These are some very talented graffiti artists. Here in the US, the graffiti seems to be mostly done by people that can barely write their gang call letters in poor penmanship. Does look like aliens too. Wonderful info on Munch.

It does look like The Scream, and I studied about this painting while an art student. If I remember correctly, The Scream was stolen, and I'm not sure if it was ever found.

If I'm not mistaken, The Scream also inspired a scene involving Homer Simpson as the screamer. Anyway, onto the artwork: I love graffiti. It's so ancient, and the modern version of it is so misunderstood. Okay, there's a lot of crap graffiti out there: stupid stuff, but then there's stuff like this! It takes real artistic talent to do something like this, especially if it's not exactly legal and must be accomplished quickly, before bored police officers on their rounds come across the act in question! What really grabs me about this is the sense of color and the perfect way in which you've captured the artwork and its environment: that, and I just love this image! This is marvelous, and I love the writup as well...it's informative, as usual, and so well done.

...and here we are getting two, for the price of one... I find it fascinating, no matter what the circumstances, at least some thought went into this, by some Graffiti artist, BB

Cool find, great shot!

it does resemble the scream of Munch, and maybe in making it, it has parallels to the felling Munch had, when creating his famous work

Superb capture and postwork which really brings out the brickwork in a way perfect for this image! Very interesting narrative! "I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature" What an experience that must have been. Excellent artwork by who ever painted this. The use of 'The Scream' that I remember is from a fairly recent English sitcom called 'Coupling'. A character named Sally has gone to a party, gotten very drunk and rather morose, and gone to the cloak room. She sees a reproduction of the painting and makes a comment about not liking it. Then they replayed the scene, from someone else's point of view (someone much more sober) and it turns out Sally was looking into a mirror.
