Description
At Okayama Station we locate the red Shimoden bus for Kojima, and an hour and a quarter south we hop onto the little Shimotsui train as it crawls out of Kojima. Down on the wharf, the Marugame ferry is ready to embark on its journey across the sea to Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands.
The Inland Sea appears to be a lost expanse of almost 3,000 islands. To the Japanese, it is Seto Naikai, the "sea between straits". It stretches 440 kilometers from east to west, yet spans only 55 kilometers at its broadest point, narrowing to as little as 5. It is enclosed by the islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
The Naruto Strait connects the eastern part of the Inland Sea to the Kii Channel, which in turn connects to the Pacific Ocean. is a Strait between Awaji Island and Shikoku in Japan. It connects Harima nada the eastern part of the Inland Sea and Kii Channel The is a Strait separating the Japanese islands of Honshu and Shikoku. The western part of the Inland Sea connects to the Sea of Japan through the Kanmon Straits and to the Pacific through the Bungo Channel.
Except for the hum of the ship's engines all is quiet. Small islands and classic Japanese sights pass before us. It is possible to meditate on the hum of the engine while you wait for the end of the trip to Shikoku.

A circle, a triangle, a line, and the deep blue sea. This is a perfect image of Japan, whose art resonates with spiritual simplicity. Beautiful!
