Description

...the German Luftwaffe pilot on the left is all set to fly from France across the English Channel in 1940. He has his inflatable life preserver and oxygen mask as well as heavy flight suit with fur collar and fur-lined boots to ward off freezing temperatures at high altitude. ...then before climbing into the small cockpit of his Messerschmidtt (see yesterday's post below), he'd don the parachute seen at his feet in this photo. ...the uniform displayed at the right is that of a Luftwaffe officer away from the flight line. This photo was taken at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. Years ago manikins like this stood next to their planes in the museum displays but light-fingered visitors made off with souvenirs...this is probably why the pilot in flight uniform doesn't have his gloves. Cool, some very nice and handy detail. I see an 'Ehrenbecker' ( Cup of Honour) on the table.Presented to outstanding pilots, inscribed around the bottom 'Dem Sieger Im Luftkampf' = To the victor in aerial combat. The first 2 were presented to Oswald Boelcke and Max Immelmann on Christmas eve 1915, and a tradition was born. Thanks for another great reference shot.

Nice shot Bill, It always seems that the air force have had smarter and neater uniforms that the other services the same today at least here they do..

LOL @ Danny! Excellent shot of this display, isn't it amazing to consider the differences with today's pilots?

Yes, I remember looking through the array of flight uniform's.. It's so sad the morons have to go a steal from museums.. Having to put stuff into cases while very pretty also adds huge cost to a museum.. Excellent shot, well shown.. Rob

Excellent photo of this display, Bill! It's kind of a sad statement of our society that even a part of history in a museum is 'fair game' for thieves.

Sweet combination of uniforms and I hated those thigh pockets. They were always in the way. Dana
