Description

This photo was taken in New Orleans pre-2005 Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans has been my favorite city to visit (not that I have been too many places, mind you). This photo was taken right outside of the same restaurant they use in the movie "Runaway Jury" when John Cusack gets the jury lunch out- I can't remember the name of the place-ha! But I had the shrimp etoufee (delish...) and the windows opened right onto the square without screens or anything....it was righteously cool I have to say. Doesn't take much to entertain me.... I feel sort of like Tennessee Williams, a great lover of New Orleans, when I look at this photo. Although I am not nearly so conflicted or depressed....Enjoy, thank you for all the kind comments and hope you are enjoying your week.

This is moody! I like it. I have the soundtrack to Interview With the Vampire playing in my mind as I look at this, not because of the crushed velvet cliche of that flim (and the book it was based on) but because of the deliciously moody and intriguing score. This image fits that score, which is a compliment since it's by one of the best composers in Hollywood. I love the Old World vibe of this shot, the way the distance hazes, apparently behind sheets of rain. Wonderful depth all around. This is quite a nice shot.

I just love this shot! I remember visiting New Orleans years ago and this just invoked some wonderful memories. It also reminds me of the turn of the century photography. Great capture!

I agree with Costa ... the turn-of-the-(last)-century feel of this image is wonderful! I can see you standing there, peering into your camera with a towel over your head, flash bar held high, hoping nothing moved. Great stuff!

This photo looks as if it has been taken a hundred years ago instead of quite recently. The Black&White contribute to this mood greatly and you captured it very well.

I remember this shot! You made it in 2004 I think, and brought me back a very nice T-shirt as I recall. I love how it looks like it was made in 1904 instead and the misty, aged mysterious quality it has. I've never been to New Orleans, but always loved the steeped in history romantic image of the place pre-Katrina. Very nice image!

Great shot Kate. I can almost feel the rain on my face. I fell in love with New Orleans in 1956 and remember this place. Artists were working here and had their paintings for sale on the fence. It stil looks the same. Brings back memories!

as has been pointed out by others, the softness in this makes it feel like a period piece, and is perfect for New Orleans (which I visited only as a child, but it left a lasting impression on me). I suppose with the shaky nature of the land, and its proximity to all that water, mixed with the terrible condition of its levies (because the state & federal authorities didn't care), it really is an ethereal place. But NOrleans is ethereal because of its remarkable spirit, it seems to inhabit another realm; and this rainy gray-day spirit here---even though the city is quiet---feels like a lot of things are going on out of frame. A lovely shot, Kate, almost European (it could be the subject of a Monet painting), and with an ever so slight tilt (do tilts run in your family, lol? Corey uses them so well too) which makes it feel different, which is perfect for NOrleans.

I was born in Louisiana and have been to New Orleans a few times, but they were mostly pre camera or fast trips to see a nephew get married or a niece act in a play. The last two times I went, I noticed the Mardis Gras beads on the trees. I went in August and September so they were sad, faded things. I tried to get some shots, but it was through a car window and they didn't come out well. When I got back to Baton Rouge (where my sister lives) after my niece's play my sister spoke what I had been thinking, that we should spend the day in New Orleans taking pictures sometime when I visit. We're hoping to do it right after Mardis Gras when the trees are ripe with fresh beads, though getting some good shots of faded ones would be fun too and Mardis Gras is late this year! I love this image! It captures the atmosphere of New Orleans beautifully, heavy with moisture and history.
