Description

This is a shot I took from the window of a coffeehouse I was sitting in during the winter in my old neighborhood in Chicago. That neighborhood doesn't look this way anymore and it makes me yearn for cold nights, diffused lighting and good conversation. I hope Corey posts some of his great photos from that time period. He has some jewels showing the heart of Chicago before some of the character left this place. I always connect experiences with colors as I paint and Chicago in the winter is cold colors, greys and blacks with just enough light to see you home. Thank you so much for all the kind comments. I really appreciate it so much. Hope you have a great weekend.

This is nice and moody, and with just a little bit of imagination, I can picture this being anywhere...especially on a rain-drenched street in Prague, with company like Pavl, or Stepan, or Kacha, or somebody distinctly Czech (and probably very loopy.) I love the moody qualities of this photo and the reflections shimmering between the internal and external worlds; that's always a good thing for me: that questioning of reality that always makes you consider whether you're "inside" or "outside." That, and this is simply a very cool shot. I love the choice of black and white, it makes the whole thing feel and look timeless. Great work.

Thanks so much Chip! Always really appreciate how detailed your comments are- you really excel at communicating how you feel and what you observe - as someone who is too much a visual communicator and not very good at knowing what to say - I really appreciate your observations.

I just love reflection shots, and I really started getting into that sort of thing on my trip to Chicago last year. For that reason I'll probably always think of Chicago and reflections in the same breath. I love what you've captured here ... the street lights, the plant next to the window, the interior lights (or is that the moon?), horizontals and verticals that must be inside the building ... this is so rich and wonderful. Excellent work!

a very moody shot, kate, and the reflections have mystery and an almost hidden palpable presence. You've handled the lighter reflections---such as the flower pot---almost as paint; and from what you say, you are a painter (which is where I come from originally---I've only been photographing one year); and it shows in the way you've handled the light both softly & suggestively. The photo tapers off into the night, and it seems to come out of there too...very night-urban, very sensitive to light & reflection, and creating a mood as chip suggests, of other worlds. Keep it coming. RR has a "2D' gallery too, btw, for artists in physical media---keep that in mind, if you ever want to post your paintings or drawings. Your choice of a red or violet tinged b&w adds to the mystery of the image...

A dreamy view of a city, and timelessness, good memories, with some contentment. Excellent.

Beautiful look on the outside and still the reflection from the inside, and the potted plant, adds so much to your shot. So can we assume that Corey is your brother and that Chip is the friend mentioned on your homepage? :>) Dana

I've always loved this shot! I think you made it in the winter of 2000 or there abouts. Love the light and shadow, great reflections and cold moody urban vibe. Great stuff!

This is so apt--I can feel the warmth of the coffee house as I sit there nursing my hot cup of java. I know it will be cold outside, but it doesn't matter. And there's a sweet comfort being there as well, the murmur of voices around me, soft talk with a friend. yes, I like this a LOT!!
