Description
Ok. I was standing on Lake Michigan 3 weeks ago, when this wave came by---it didn't call, didn't drop a note, it just roared in from god-knows-where, crashed against the pier---that's what you see here---arched twice as high & then crashed down on me like a freakin' ocean. It weighed 9 million tons, it was freezing, and when it left, I was flat on the pier. Then---you listening, photographers? I cried: "My camera!!!" I shot up, ripped off my scarf, and furiously wiped my camera!!! Several people yelled: "What in the world are you doing??? You're soaking wet & you're worried about your camera???" I couldn't answer. Even I thought I was crazy! But: I kept wiping! Because that freaking soaking drenched dripping coughing freezing camera was wet, and everyone said, "don't get your camera wet!" And here's the thing: I'd just gotten over a lung infection! I could hear my friends screaming, "you stood under a 20 foot wave when you just got over an infection???" But then behold: A Voice cried out from the Sky (true story now), and said: "You have been baptized!!!" "Really???" I said. "Yes! You, my son, are a
(Ok, that didn't happen. The whole 'voice' thing's a lie...) BUT! When my friends question me hereafter, I say: "On that day I became a Photographer!" (In the meantime, my camera sued me for everything...)
This wave, ladies & gentlemen, was captured on Lake Michigan on October 15th, 2010. I know, it looks like an explosion in a cotton factory, but it's not...

This is a review and reread of this wonderful picture and account. For someone who does not post daily, you still make it hard for me to whittle down which ones to comment on, but I see this jewel is about to slip off of the front page, so... Such a wonderful image, tale, and telling! I am glad that camera and photographer are both fine, and yes, I would also be wiping away on the camera, shivering and trying to avoid salty water mixing in with the fresh. And perhaps giving air to a bit of salty language too. I don't know about a voice on high, but I think there was a malevolent entity in that wave. It looks positively out to get you, with arms outstretched, and an opening in the center to pull you into. Wonderful capture of the beastie, and its exuberance and power. I love the motion of the water in the background, the baaarrrrooosh (whoosh just didn't cut it) of the furious wave whose straight lines of exploding force are excellently caught in your photo, and the inky, still water in the foreground. Knowing that your camera forgave you (well, after the slight issue of a lawsuit) and your lungs continued to heal, (probably after a wheeze or two to try to remind you of proper priorities), I can read you narrative with unadulterated pleasure. Wonderful descriptions and humor. If you needed a baptism to accept your rightful place as a photographer, I glad you got it with no permanent damage done. You could have just asked any number of us here, you know.
