Description
An ink drawing from the 1980s. I posted a later version early on. This is the original however, as I personally thought it better in b&w... (The original is this small, btw: It was made for a book.) Pen & ink, w/ sepia wash.

Mark, I am so happy to see you posting one of your wonderful Ink drawings. This little Tea House is just wonderful. You have made awesome crosshatch and a beautiful and soft balance between light and shadow. And I so love way you do that. You also did it with the Danish Village Houses from my photo. Hope this link works. I just adore that drawing too. The tree to the left is so lovely and graceful. You really did a great job. I hope you will find time to do more of this soon.

A very inviting little tea house. It has wonderful detail and textures and the addition of the sweeping tree in the upper left adds a nice softness and depth to the scene. I've never done pen and ink but I imagine it requires a good deal of patience. One could not rush such an intricate process and would be inclined to relax and enjoy the creation as it slowly comes to life. Lovely artwork, Mark.

So glad I'm able to see this one Make as my computer has had me fighting it for days now. This is such a glorious image my friend and you really should be so proud of it. The skill it takes to create such a lovely work of art like this is something only a few people have. The detailing here is mindboggling and it's hard to imagine the time you have in shading alone. Your right about it standing out even more in B&W as this clearly shows that.

wonderful pic!! fabulous inage and work!!

Now I see why shading in photography fascinates you as it does. You have painstakenly added subtle toning, blending light and darkness in a way a non-drawer can only marvel at. This makes me want to take a pencil drawing class. Might even make me a better photographer. Pardon me, I have to go now and spend some more time staring...:)

Of course I went back and looked at the other version from two years ago for the sake of comparison! :) I like the warmth of the colored version, the light, but I think it's missing much of the gorgeous detail. This original b&w version has depth and softness and an intimacy that the other one doesn't have. This is beautiful, and it's wonderful to see you posting a drawing. I love your photography down to my toes, but when you post stuff like this, my jaw drops and I just marvel at your talent. This image draws me in, makes me think I could walk up and open that lovely door. I can hear a slight breeze in the branches of that tree, smell the tea and the wood, feel the heat from the brazier ... and you didn't even draw that part! This is superb, my friend.

A super image with amazing detail. I can see your talent isn't just for photography with this excellent work. I always admire pen and ink drawings as they take so long to do.

BEAUTIFUL! GORGEOUS IMAGE!i love it it's very suggestive of an oriental mood, maybe you used a Chinese ink and a badger brush, or a pen? great work!

Absolutely wonderful, Mark!! your ink drawings are terrific! So much to see...all the little traces and cross hatch, on and on , creating deepness, and diferent textures. You did light and the dark so very well ...it is incredible and words are not enough. Yet, you added mistery around, in the atmosphere, with such subtlety. The tree framing in the top left, in a first plan, and the foliage behind the house, give us a perfect tridimensional view of the image. All my life to understand how you do that, and i could not, surely! A real wonder! Thank you very much, Mark, for your work :))

Teahouse of the August Moon. So, what can I say? I can see that all the adjectives, kudos, and superlatives that I had in store for my complimentary comments have already been used by the members above, Mark. I'll just say, stellar and superb ink and pen work, my friend!

What Tara said; as always, she is able to verbalize what I feel and can't say! This is so stunning...

I'm delighted to see this back in your gallery - I saw it when you first posted it, admired it, drooled over the technique, went away to get a cloth to wipe up my desk... and by the time I got back it had gone! Wtf, I said (quoting Shakespeare, "A Midsummer Nightmare", unexpurgated and unpublished manuscript, 1605), I didn't see any violence, nudity or expletives... Must be Mark messing with the remains of my mind, I thought. And of course I was right... This is exquisite. Beautifully crafted (I'm still drooling over the technique), powerful yet delicate, and full of implied mystery.. What time of day is this? Is it closed because the tea party's over, or is it still raging behind the closed doors? As a five-year-old, I acted in "Tea House of the August Moon" (I had my big moment rushing onto the stage bawling my heart out because I'd been "forgotten" as everyone gathered under the cherry tree outside the Tea House) - and this takes me right back there... Thank you, Mark, for a wonderful work of art.

This is marvelous! I too admire the bold, confident, strokes. Drawing with pen & ink scares me silly. I love the lines, textures, and depth! This is a wonderful representation of the quietness that is behind the hustle and bustle of modern Japan. (Well, by modern I think of 30 years ago, so perhaps I should say modernish) When I was there you could feel the quiet soul underneath, even in the most busy of places. A shadowed corner, a small garden, a temple, or in a pair of eyes, it was there. I see it here in the deep shadows, the ancient architecture of graceful lines, the textures that draw one in to the beauty and grain of wood, and the connection with nature in the lovely curves of the branches. Beautiful drawing! Wonderful lines, detail, and contrast! I like this a lot!

Really fine drawing,Mark. You have done an excellent job conveying the texture and solidity of the wood.
