Description

Sugar Gliders, petaurus breviceps, are small arboreal, nocturnal marsupials native to Australia, Tasmania, Indonesia and New Guinea. They belong to an Order that includes kangaroos, wombats, opossums and Tasmanian devils. Their head and body measure 5 to 6 inches (12.5cm - 15cm), with a very soft, brushy tail the same length. They weigh about 4 to 6 oz (that's 5 metric tonnes...just kidding! Really, 115 - 170 grams). They can glide, like a flying squirrel, up to 50 feet (13m). In their native habitat, they are awake and active all night, and fill the area they inhabit with chirps and barks, continuously talking to each other. Cute, warm and fuzzy (furry), they are sometimes kept as pets. One must remember that they are not domesticated and exercise due caution. These creatures can bond with a human "friend", but a human does not replace the need for one (or several) of their own kind, as in the wild they live in groups of up to 30. In this photo, one pauses in his sleeping sack to get a snack. (There are several in the sack.) I'd like to thank No Limit Exotic Pets (and Rescue) of Portland, Oregon for allowing me to photograph the creatures. Information on these cute creatures came from Sugarglider.com. Thanks for the look, and for any comments you care to make. A big Thanks to you who have favorited me or any of my submissions. I wish you a happy start of the Holiday Season.

They surely are cute little critters, aren't they? I know they were 'the' pet a few years back, so I'm sure that rescues have a few of them that people turned in, finding out that they are basically wild animals!
