Description

We were recently down at Fort Lewis, just south of Tacoma, Washington. While this is just a picture of Mount Rainier from a different angle, it's a view not many people get to see since it was taken from an Army base. When they laid out the parade ground in 1917 they made sure they had a good view! Let me tell you exactly where I was when I took this shot: Directly between me and the mountain is a HUGE grassy expanse -- the parade ground at Fort Lewis. (This is where the soldiers practice marching around.) Watkins Field is about 2000 feet long, which is something like 6-1/2 football fields or just under half a mile. I took this shot at a pretty extreme telephoto setting. A standard wide-angle shot would show grass, grass and more grass, and Mount Rainier sort of off in the distance, although still pretty imposing! Directly behind me across a narrow road is a World War I monument, and directly behind that monument is a circular drive on which five large homes stand. These are the General's quarters. The big-shot General would have the house in the middle, so the view from that house would be of the parade ground with Mount Rainier beyond. I like this view of Mount Rainier because it's not the usual view we see from up north. I've taken pictures of Rainier from the air, and I'm including links for you just in case you'd like to see what it looks like from different angles. This really is an unusual sight! Mount Rainier from the north Mount Rainier from the south (it's the third shot down.) If you go to Google Maps and search on Fort Lewis, Washington and zoom in to the point where the distance marker in the corner says 2000 feet you'll have a pretty good idea of where I was and of how big that parade ground really is!

Impressive photo, Tara! I can see where you were - right on 9th Division Rd - that is a loooooong grassy field! That really gives you a feel for how massive this volcanic mountain really is. Hope it sleeps peacefully for a long time...

I like this picture Tara, and i like your write up just as much. The big-shot general, is that the one with more than one star?

WOW! Ya know, from this angle in particular, I can tell that Mount Ranier is a sleeping volcano. That cone is gorgeous! Kinda young still, but hopefully this puppy isn't going to pull a Mount Saint Hellen Maneuver and decide that it just doesn't need most of its side anymore. I don't think it will though, which is a good thing since the side I'm seeing is so gorgeous! I love the texture, the light and shadow interplay and the nice angle of the cone. I like this a lot. It's nicely yummy with cool powdered frosting on top!
