Description
I said I'd be back last week, but I couldn't make it happen...It's been so busy catching up after the last few months, I just didn't get here. But I'm on my way to see my father for Thanksgiving, and I wanted to say hello & wish my American friends a thankful & peaceful thanksgiving, and the rest of you a beautiful end of November! I'll be gone a week & when I return, I'll be back here again. For all you Ninjas out there (ie, Harry, Cheri, Marilyn, etc etc), I don't know how you do it! I've been stopped by police, told "that's my CAR sir!!!", had people duck, glare & freeze 'till I lowered my camera, and been pummeled by waves & sworn at by a goose: I rated a "Minus 300" on the Sneak Factor List. And they were being kind. But last week, this gull did stretches right in front of my eyes, so I finally got on the Ninja list! Now I can join the ranks of the rest of you, and that's a major relief! Taken last week in a pond, Lincoln Park, Chicago.

Mark--1 Gull-0 LOL, it was bound to happen sooner or later!! And hmm, this must be "Standing on Railing Over Water". I'll have to try it. But will anyone be around to get me untangled??? Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and thank YOU for just being you. ps--and yes, Mr, Ninja, not only are you ON the list, this foto ROCKS, (well maybe not rocks, but he does balance well!!).

Mark, this is such a wonderful capture of this beautiful gull. It seems you do deserve the honor of being on that ninja's list now with this one and thanks for sharing your thoughts behind it. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving with your Dad and can return to us soon.

new meaning to talk to the HAND! Try shooting from the hip Mark when getting those candid shots...just remember to tilt your camera lens ever so slightly to provide a different perspective on the shot. Like looking up to the heavens and stars. After a while of practicing it will become second nature to you to take from that angle!

It's really a unique shot. I've never seen a gull photographed from that angle. I like it. You are definitely getting your Ninja/Photographer battle scars. Anything for the shot, right? Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your father. CC

When you start looking for a new camera, let's talk about swivel screens. Seriously. And you can't project an "I'm sneaking around like a ninja" vibe, either. When you tiptoe around, picking your feet up eighteen inches off the ground, hunching your shoulders over your camera, people will SEE you! I'll teach you how to don the cloak of invisibility. Getting busted three times in one weekend is a bit much. I don't want to have to come bail you out of the pokey! LOL! Aside from all that ... this picture is outstanding! The bird's position really does make me think of yoga and tai-chi. All my animal shots turn out blurry, so you're clearly doing a bunch of things right that I haven't figured out yet. Superb capture! Have a great time in Florida, and a safe trip home. >:D< :X

Super shot...feathery details and lots of light. Well done. I've seen pictures of this kind of act before...let's see, it was June 30, 1851 at 5pm...the headlines cried, "The Great Blondin, First Tightrope Walker to Cross Niagara Falls". Your gull is simply using his wings as his balancing pole and a metal railing in lieu of a 3 inch rope.
MrsRatbag
I always love how their wings look so strong when they do this move; beautiful capture, and have a wonderful trip and holiday!

how good it must be just to flap and go, great shot
dragonmuse
Wonderful details on the feathers. Great timing on catching the stretch.

Hilarious! You are very unlucky, Mark! What a super bird pic, though! A wonderful 'fill-the-frame' compo too!

Wow Mark this is one amazing detail and sharp piece of photography. How you managed to get that gull to stand like that for a while I will never know lol. Seriously though that was a very difficult shot as it would have been just a nano second for to be able to get that shot before he flapped off on his travels to scavenge again. Well done, and I take my hat off to you dear friend, hugs Jane xx

fantastic image!!

Not exactly a high wire circus act, but close to it in this splendid shot of the derring-do gull practicing its balancing skills, Mark. Stellar POV, contrast and patterns in this one! And enjoy your trip down south.

sublime, awesome, terrific and spectacular shot, Mark!

This is so great! I hope you had a good time with your dad.

This is a sublime Ninja Shot...I have yet to capture anything like this, though I did get a rather pronounced episode of "evil eye" from one of these fine feathered people. This is quite amazing. I love the clarity, the light, the color, the details, and especially the way you've captured the scale like pattern of those feathers. I'm in awe of this, especially of the oh-so-casual way you appear to have photographed it...and as for Ninja Photography...well...I have strange memories of people in Germany simply disappearing. Point a camera at the people who live in Dortmund and they phase shift or something: they don't move, you simply DON'T capture them, no matter how many times you click the shutter. It's quite unnerving. And yeah, on another note, this is Master Ninja stuff here! Especially since you were THAT CLOSE! Yeah, that's frikkin' cool! Was this in Lincoln Park somewhere? I love this shot, and those tail feathers are amazing! THAT is all of the balance right there! Nice!

Oh yes, this must be the start of the Downward Dog, LOL!! Wonderful shot, and you are now officially a Ninja Shooter!!! An absolutely magnificent capture!! You have to be really fast with your trigger finger to get these shots!! Bravo!! LOL, most definitely look for swivel screens in your next camera!!! How do you think I manage my ground level, worm's eye view shots? You don't really think I lay down on the ground, head glued to the dirt to get those shots????? Or wallow in the creek up to my nostrils to get some of those shots????
