Description

X 2000 The X2, also called the X 2000, is a high speed long distance train developed for the Swedish railroad system. The locomotive is designated X2, the cars are designated UA2, UB2 and URB2. The X 2000 trains were developed for high speeds on old, curvy tracks. This entailed creating a “soft” truck/boogie construction and a system for leaning the cars in curves (for passenger comfort in curves at high speeds). The trains are VERY comfortable, smooth running and quiet (from my experiences riding them). The trains revolutionized train travel in Sweden, reducing the travel time Malmoe – Stockholm from 6 ½ hours to 4 hours 20 minutes, making the train competitive with air travel (= approximately 3 hours, whereof 1 hour in the air, and 2 hours travel to/from airports, check-in, security checks, plane ticket and bus costs, hassle, etc.). The distance Malmoe - Stockholm is 614 km./384 miles. As a result, rail travel has become very popular and has expanded to such an extent that most delays that occur are due to traffic congestion, since slower passenger trains and freight trains use the same tracks. With the opening of the bridge between Malmoe and Copenhagen, the X 2000 trains run to Denmark, too. A new generation is now in the design process. Manufactured by ASEA and Kalmar Verkstad 1989 – 1998. Number manufactured: 44 Six car electric set, double ended cabs (number of cars can vary). Length: 164.2 meters/541 feet 15,000 volts, 16 2/3 Hz, 3,260 kiloWatts Maximum speed 200 km. per hour (125 miles per hour), but has been clocked at 276 km. per hour (172.5 miles per hour) experimentally. 204 - 318 seats (depending on number of cars in the set), 4 seats abreast. 318 passengers = a 6 car set. Recent renovations include electric sockets at each seat and wireless Internet connections. Run by SJ (Statens Järnvägar/Swedish State Railroad). Photo by me at Lund railroad station, November 22, 2010.

A popularity paradox, improve the service, increase demand, create congestion.A nice looking train though. It sounds like just the thing we need over here.

Now, if California can get their funding(cough, cough) we can get the high speed rail. Great capture and history of this train.
