Description

This is St. Paul's Church in the historic company town of Port Gamble, Washington, site of a very busy and profitable lumber mill from 1853 to 1995. "St. Paul's Church sits on a sloping grass bluff overlooking the waters of Port Gamble Bay. The church, built in 1879, is modeled after a church in the Maine hometown of Port Gamble's founders. The meticulously restored church boasts 8 cathedral stained glass windows, original pews and a domed altar area. One of the most photographed buildings in the area, the picturesque church steeple houses the original church bell, and wedding couples thrill to the sound of the church bell ringing as they are pronounced Husband and Wife". Quote above from a web site for planning your wedding at Port Gamble. Super shot, but one question? I´ve noticed that many "old" buildings in america are built from wood, why is this?,

Beautiful photo of the classical American rural/small town church. Interesting with the symetry. I assume the black thing to the right of the steeple is a smoke stack. Would be fun to see the inside, too. Probably nice and comfy. So, the abandoned saw mill from the other day is in Port Gamble. Thanks for the nice post. :-)

What a perfect capture, which is harder than one might think given the height of the place! Beautiful, and thanks for the information!

Beautiful church, shame it has to have a chimney which breaks up the lovely lines.

This looks like a wonderful place to get married! Such a pretty, pretty building. Hmm...so the founders came from Maine. Will have to do some research on that. I may not get to Washington, but I'm right next door to Maine, LOL.

Okay, I am going to watch my 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' tonight... Brad and Janet could be walking down these stairs! Your symmetry on this is perfect, Bill! Very historic, Clive

Super pov! I know how hard it is to get a decent shot of this church, having tried several times myself. You've done an excellent job with this! (They couldn't have picked a worse color for the climate, could they?) In any event, you took a difficult subject and made it look great. Really fine work!
