Description
It was in the parlor of the Ermatinger House that a famous coin toss between Francis Pettygrove and Asa Lovejoy occurred during a dinner party held in the house in 1845. The two were arguing about whether the town they envisioned on their land claim, then called The Clearing, should be incorporated as Boston—Lovejoy's hometown in Massachusetts—or Portland—Pettygrove's hometown in Maine. Pettygrove won two out of three tosses, resulting in the city of Portland, Oregon.
This is Portland's Pioneer Square. The old courthouse is the large building on the right. Every year around this time the square is packed with thousands of people who have come to witness the annual lighting of the city's Christmas tree. Two days ago this celebration was the target of an unsuccessful plot to set off a large car bomb. Near the center of this image you can see a black van parked approximately where this bomb would have been placed. The attempt was stopped due to the efforts of the FBI. It seems we have something new for which to be thankful.

I love the warm colour of the pavers. How on earth do they keep it clear of chewing gum?!

The pavers (bricks) are kept clean out of reverence (and respect)... every brick has a person, or persons name on it, in rememberence, by family members. Portland is my hometown, and we gave my paternal grandparents (now deceased) a brick when they first restored the square years ago....
